Tried the electric route a couple of times. You have to shave every day so the whiskers are short enough to get clipped. And the neck! I could never shave close enough on my neck with an electric razor. I could shave my head with an electric, though. But I really like the closeness of a blade, and the irritation is at a tolerable level.
BTW, I use an old Oster dog groomer to trim my scruffy goatee.
No electric razor will shave as close as a blade. In my opinion (I’ve tried them all) the NORELCO rotary head shavers work better than the linear-head ones (Braun, Wahl, Remington). If you have a heavy beard, it is important to use a pre-shave lotion (Lectric Shave)-it will make the hairs stand up and cut easier. The problem with electric razors: of you don’t use a rechargeable razor every day, you may find your batteries do not hold a charge-and replacing the NiCd battery pack is almost as much as buying a new razor. Replacement cutters for the Norelco are expensive as well…sometimes you can buy a NEW razor for less than the cost of replacing the cutters and screen.
I use a blade now at home-on travel I use a corded electric (Wahl). This is a cheap brand, but works almost as well as the Norelco!
I have a very expensive Panasonic model and like it a lot. It seems to work about as well as my Mach 3 blade razor. I think it takes a little longer, but OTOH I’m not stuck in front of a mirror fumbling about with a sharp blade while half-asleep.
