My husband always uses a regular razor to shave his face. He has told me that this is because he has such coarse hair and it grows in all different directions. In the past he claims to have not found an Electric Shaver that works for him.
A few weeks ago he mentioned that he’d like to try again with an Electric Shaver, barring that its a good one. Knowing my husband he wont make this purchase himself, so I thought I’d get him one for Christmas.
Now, as i have zero knowledge on which Electric Shaver to go with, I thought i’d ask all you Doper Guys out there, or you Doper ladies who are in the know, WHICH ELECTRIC SHAVER do I buy?
I just read on “BestElectricShaverReviews.com” (whoa, really?) that the Panasonic ES8243A Arc IV Nano Men’s Wet/Dry Rechargeable is the best.
Anyone?

I’m surprised that the reviews tend to favor the foil shavers. The one foil shaver I’ve tried doesn’t cut. At all. It takes several passes before you can even discern a difference. The only reason I keep it around is that the beard trimmer is fantastic.
So what do you use that doesnt have the foil?
I don’t care for foil shavers either. If I use an electric razor I use a three head, usually Norelco
My experience is the opposite – rotary shavers suck. My old Braun shavers were so much better than the Norelco I got, but I wanted one with a decent chance of replacing the battery when it wore out, and it’s been a pain in the ass ever since. I need to move around a lot to get thorough shaving, because my beard is in crazy directions, and the Norelco has very little useful contact area. Next time I can afford to do so, I’m ditching that POS and getting another Braun – I no longer care about the battery.
I don’t believe there’s such a thing as a “best performance” electric razor. Facial hair varies quite a bit among men, and a razor that works great for one person will not work well when used by another.
For what it’s worth, here’s my experience with them.
I have a very thick and fast growing beard. For the last twenty eight years I’ve used 3-head rotary shavers. (I’ve probably owned at least seven of them.) A few months ago I bought my first foil shaver - a Braun Series 3.
There are pros and cons to each. A 3-head rotary shaver is lightweight and inexpensive, but does not give a close shave and is difficult to clean. By contrast, my Braun foil shaver gives a *much *closer shave and is very easy to clean, but it’s somewhat heavier and significantly more expensive. It should also be mentioned that although the Braun is *capable *of shaving closer, it requires many many passes in order for it to do so. In other words, if you want a close shave, you must use a foil shaver *and *it will require quite a bit of time.
So here’s my general routine:
Saturday: No shaving.
Sunday: No shaving.
Monday morning: I have significant growth. I used my rotary shaver to quickly shave it down, and then use my foil shaver to get a close shave.
Tuesday morning: Foil shaver. (As mentioned above, it takes more time than the rotary shaver, but I get a closer shave.)
Wednesday morning: Foil shaver.
Thursday morning: Foil shaver.
Friday morning: Foil shaver.
I have a similar model from a few years ago and like it quite a bit. It requires a number of passes, but does a good job. It used to be that I’d use an electric shaver during the week and a Gillette Mach 3 on the weekends, but since getting the Panasonic I haven’t really felt the need to use a safety razor.
If you buy a foil shaver, here’s some advice:
Buy replacement parts right then. They change the design of these things every 2 weeks and trying to find replacement parts can be difficult. They have lots of replacement parts, just not necessarily the one that you need for your model shaver. (I know, I know, I could find the right one on-line but usually when I need them I need them right away).
I usually buy 2 replacements when I get the shaver.
