Electric Shavers - Which is the best?

My trusty old Braun shaver has bit the dust. It still works, but won’t hold a charge anymore, so I need to use it plugged in, which sort of negates the advantage of the cordless shaver. Also the foil has a hole in one side that is slowly chewing me up and spitting me out. So, I’m in the market for a new razor, and looking for advice.

Braun or Remington? Norelco? Rotary or foil (I’ve always used a foil one)? Does that self-cleaning thing make for a better shave, or is it just a gimmick to justify an extra $50 on the price?

I can’t really give any advice, but I like my shaver, a Norelco 6886 XL.

I bought my hubby the new Braun with the self-cleaning thing for Christmas and he absolutely loves it. I don’t know if it’s the cleaner or just because his old one was so crappy in comparison to the new one.

I mostly use a blade but have had a cordless for backup duty for several years. Never used a Braun although I’ve heard good things about them. Previously owned a Norelco rotary and presently have a Remington screen and prefer the Norelco between the two. The Remington is ok and it’s dependable but so was the Norelco and the rotary heads seem to be a little more efficient to me.

I’ve always used Braun non-rotary shavers. No complaints about any of the models I’ve used.

I used Brauns for about 15 years, when one broke when I was out of town. The nearby drug store only had a $60, three rotary cutters in a triangle layout Norelco, so I bought it. And you know what? It does a MUCH better job than the Brauns I used to use - the large cutting surface cleans up my neck and cheeks much faster and at least as close, and the triangle layout makes it easy to angle the front rotary cutter up for the harder to reach stuff. I was shocked. The sound of the razor is more high pitched and irritating than the Braun, but the job it does makes that an easy trade off.

I’d check the Consumer Reports, which studied this in November or December 2002. IDPRC, the difference between cheap and expensive ones was not huge.
