Elektra (the Movie)

(I haven’t seen the movie yet, just read the reviews)

I’m kind of a Marvel Comics fan. I was thrilled with the X-Men and Spider-Man films, and I even liked the Hulk. Daredevil was another story – although it had some interesting moments, I didn’t really like the movie in total. I had apprehension about the Punisher and after sitting though it, I really wished I hadn’t.

Now I see Elektra got a measly 2% rating from Rotten Tomatoes and I don’t even want to go near it.

Maybe this is necessary. Maybe Avi Arad needs to realize that simply having a character that’s popular in comic books doesn’t guarantee you a successful film. That comic-book movies (kind of like all other types of movies) need talented writers and directors to helm the projects for them to succeed.

I know it’s wrong to dis a movie I haven’t even seen. Maybe if enough of you tell me that it’s worth the ticket price, I’ll give it a shot. Let me know.

I haven’t seen it either, but I was kind of wondering about it since I first saw the commercials. It’s almost like Marvel is trying to cash in on DC’s huge success with Catwoman. Hey, waitaminute…

I mean, seriously, what’s going on here? “Produce an unoriginal clone of the succesful movie your competition just made” has been standard Hollywood practice forever (heck, even before the days of movies), but “Produce an unoriginal clone of the unsuccesful movie your competition just made” just seems a little too stupid even for Hollywood execs.

The general vibe I get is “not very good. not AWFUL, but not good either. Jennifer Garner may be the the one aspect that moves the mivie for total crap to just bad”

I can’t resist saying this: apparently Elektra was only mostly dead at the end of Daredevil.

Brian

She wasn’t dead at all or else her necklace can walk and knows where Matt Murdoch lives.

No, it’s aweful. There seems to be no motivation for anything, it’s ridiculously manipulative, the characters make no sense and I could go on and on.

In the end of daredevil, Elektra was a woman seeking revenge for her fathers death to a friggin hired killer. I mean at least explain how that transition occured.

There is the typical marvel cartoon sequence at the beginning of the movie that sort of explains how the Elektra world works. They don’t explain much and when you first meet the bad guys they all of a sudden want to kill Elektra, and the treasure. WHY for gods sake. I mean I know the answer now but I didin’t at the time.

I could list the negatives in this movie until I’m blue in the face.

I admit, I’m somewhat curious as to why so many people disliked DD. It was overly pretentious and a bit slow, but I thought it was reasonably originally, had excelent cinematography, appropriate (and sometimes good) acting, especially Colin Farel’s Bullseye, and told an enjoyable story. It wasn’t great art, but it was enjoyable. Can anyone give me the specifics of that?

Hulk was definitely over-the-top, though I like it in spite of that. I can see why many poeple wouldn’t.

Punisher was very uneven, with a somewhat lackluster first 3rd and finale. But I thought the meat of the movie worked reasonably well, with the caveat that I never got why those damned assassins didn’t just bust in with a shotgun and blast him.

I caught an early showing of Elektra this afternoon, and my overall reaction was “Meh.” I wouldn’t call it a bad movie – I’ve seen much, much worse – but I definitely wasn’t impressed.

One thing that struck me was that it didn’t have the lighthearted moments of other Marvel movies. X-Men, Spider-Man and Daredevil all had pretty serious plot lines, but they all had scenes that made me laugh, too. Elektra was dead serious from the get-go. There wasn’t one lighthearted moment in the movie. And, as drm noted, the characters and their motivation were never explained.

Overall, this movie was a disappointment.

I didn’t like DD because in it Daredevil was a pussy who spent the majority of the movie getting his ass handed to him. Thats not really what I’m shooting for in an escapist comic movie.

I wish I could help, smiling bandit, but I seem to be one of the few people who liked Daredevil.

Ah well. Bull’s Eye alone carried the movie, regardless of the rest. I could watch a whole movie of him making jokes and kicking butt.

Watching Daredevil, I had to seriously fight the urge to turn the damn thing off. And I actually liked Hulk and the Punisher. So I’m passing on Elektra.

I absolutely hated DareDevil. It was just so… bweeeh.
I don’t know : it was uninspired, the acting was terrible, the story was missing.
(Ben ‘I can’t act to save my own life’ Affleck didn’t help either).

I kinda liked the Punisher, but thought it was a bit too sadistic towards the end, without any redeeming qualities.

And I absolutely loved the Hulk.
I thought it was beautifully done.
Only the ending was very dissapointing.
