So, I saw the trailer for the Elektra movie the other day and wasn’t sure I’d heard it right. So I waited for it to come on again, and turns out I was right: they said that Elektra could see into the future.
What’s up with that anyway? I mean, I’m surprised I haven’t heard more geek ravings about this change, thought I suppose they may have been distracted by her outfit.
Cunctator, it’s the Marvel Comics Elektra (girlfriend of Daredevil) movie we’re discussing.
I saw the trailer and just about fell over laughing. Looks to me like the upcoming Constantine is going to have competition for the title of worst comic book movie adaptation of 2005. What’s sad is that the critics and the general public will see (or, more likely, hear about) these awful films and assume they’re bad because they’re based on comic books.
It’s the Elektra character from the Daredevil movie.
I’m one of the few people who liked Daredevil, and I didn’t care about this movie even before I saw the trailer, which looks like bad late-night basic cable fare. Daredevil was interesting because it attempted to be a bit more realistic and gritty than the usual run of superhero movies. The Elektra trailer is a bad mix of Tarantino and martial arts fantasy flicks.
January is typically the burial ground for movies too weak to make a go of it any other time of year. You can be number one in January with a movie that makes what Spiderman made in an hour. Elektra may hit number one and still go unseen and uncared about, even by geeks.
I agree; I know it wasn’t well-received here, but I thought it did wat it intended to do quite well. Same for Hulk (which still needed more editing, but was enjoyable overall). And heck, DD probably had one of the best villains in any of the Marvel movies - or any comic-book movie.
To review, here are the classics:
Lex Luthor (Superman, etc.) - frankly, I don’t think these aged well. I didn’t see them as a child and I think they’re mediocre at best. I understand why they did well at the time, but still… Anyway, Luthor just seemed weird but pointless to me, unlike his comic and tv incarnations.
The Joker - not a bad contender, in his Jack Nicolson form. He had so many cute tricks (like the 3-foot gun/pistol down his pants) that just won me over. Still, the acting was definitely an aquired taste. Jack didn’t quite cover the sheer insanity of the character well, though that might be script, directing, or editor.
Magneto - OK, I love him best. He just makes it look so effortless. He’s rational and fanatical all at the same time; he has worthy goals and believes in very bad means. Ruthless but not inhuman, he probably tops my list.
Bullseye - He’s not a mastermind, he’s not really insane, and he’s so damned funny I just love this guy. He may not go down for planning, but he’s got style alright.
My favourite superhero movie was “Spiderman 2” with Tobey Maguire and Alfred Molina (the man was genius as Doc Ock.) As for “Elektra”, I was really hyped up about it because it’s starring Jennifer Garner (my favourite actress), she kicks butt, and “Daredevil” was different for me. The trailer kind of dampened it for me, though. But, it looks like okay-entertainment and a passable time-killer. But, I might just wait until it comes out on DVD if it gets really awful reviews.
Naturally, I hope it’s a good, enjoyable movie and does well at the box office.
I do love Jennifer Garner and thinks she’s great on “Alias.” That said, it took me awhile to get used to her cast as Elektra in the Daredevil movie. My expectations were low, and overall, I bought her performance, but not her look (the comic version has DARK hair, Ms. Garner did not). There was only one line that I didn’t think she pulled off.
But if I was gonna cast Jennifer Garner in a Daredevil movie, I think she would be a perfect Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.
Elektra is my hero. The guy at the comic book store I used to frequent would save all Elektra posters for me. My subscription list includes any appearance of Elektra.
I have no plans of seeing the movie. For one thing, Jennifer Garner is a decent actress, and a lovely woman. But a Greek woman? No. Elektra is cool enough that she doesn’t need to see into the future. The woman took out Wolverine for Chrissakes!
I’m one of apparently three people that liked *DareDevil *but I’m not particularly interested in Elektra, even as eye candy… Garner just isn’t as hot as what her fans and Hollywood try to make her out to be.
Of course, I wasn’t interested in seeing DD originally either so there’s no telling what I’ll eventually think of this movie.
That irked me. They couldn’t have darkened her hair for the more exotic look of the comicbook Electra. I suspect the producers wanted Jennifer Garner to be recognizable as Jennifer Garner.
Sorry, that was supposed to be a rhetorical question, but I gaffed the punctuation: “They couldn’t have darkened her hair?” (That’s what I get for trying to be dramatic.
Oh, and this movie could end up being the Catwoman of 2005 if they boggle it.
Combine it with run of the mill action hero stuff and you’re there. I mean, what’s the most successful current comic book/movie crossover? X-Men. And what does Mystique’s costume consist of? A few dabs of latex paint. It’s the only female superhero costume that even APPROACHES the sexiness of comic superheroine costumes.
