Elementary school lunches

Those things are disgusting. The outside just tastes like… well it’s bad. Those were the options given to vegetarians in my middle school, and boy did they suck. Horray for the ability to make my own food by then. I pity Lucy’s grandchildren now.

So glad that I’m not the only one who saw it that way at first–I had to look close to see what it really said!

The way that menu is written is what’s inscrutable to me–my kids’ school menu lists the full meal for each day. No headings for “entree” and “side items.”

Boy, looking at my kids’ menu , I sure wish we’d had stuff like taco salad when I was in school! Kids today have a lot more variety than we used to!

Actually, I pity all the kids at these schools. And my property taxes are paying for … exactly what?

Entree: Hot Dog. Side dish: Hot Dog Bun.
Entree: Hamburger. Side dish: Hamburger Bun.

Are you kidding me? :dubious: No fries? Not even potato chips? At least at McDonald’s the bun isn’t a side dish!

Best thing the whole week is the upgrade to a pepperoni pizza. (Usually it’s just cheese!)

And since when is Nachos considered an entree?

What really galls me is the idea that they post the nutritional information. Like that makes it okay. They’ll sure fool all the parents with that.

[DEL]Shit![/DEL] I meant shoot. (Honest. That other is what they feed the kids here …)

Can we borrow your nutritionists until our district can hire someone with a brain?

I just sent a link to that page to all of the members of our school board. I reminded them that five of the seven are up for reelection this year.

In the meantime, I’ll see if I can get the grandkids transfered to your school 'till ours figures out what food is … the commute in the mornings will be a bit of a bitch but, oh, well …

Where the hell is Brewton, anyway?

As someone who only recently left such a cafeteria, I can attest that we said a prayer of thanks when we saw the little rectangles. At least they were regularly edible.

Perhaps we’re thinking of different pizzas. The ones I recall were simple cheese pizzas cut into slices that resembled flat frozen fish fillets. I’d eat them but they certainly weren’t my favorite.

My friend, who moved to another school system, sometimes had a school lunch called “Peanut Butter Ball”. I never found out exactly what it was but was always jealous of him. I think I would have liked Peanut Butter Ball.

Fish wouldn’t impress the kids here, neither would a lot of the meatier dishes. Bell pepper sticks, probably not. Interesting to see that Tex-Mex has jumped the pond to Scandinavian schools!

My son loves his school lunches. I talked to the cafeteria manager when school began and she says their goal is to have all children eat. If they don’t/won’t eat anything offered on a particular day, they’re always welcome to have a ham and cheese sandwich or a peanut butter and jelly. It looks like yogurt and graham crackers are always offered, too; kind of questionable as an entree, but some kids are hideously picky.

Cherry Boy says they swoop around during lunch and give little prizes to kids who are ENJOYING their vegetables (not just eating, mind you: ENJOYING) which galls him because he yums 'em down every day. Good boy.

I started to think the whole “school lunches suck” was a thing of the past (mine certainly did, except for the aforementioned rectangle pizzas YUM) but Lucy’s post makes me wonder. They do a pretty good job here. My daughter started out bringing her lunch but quickly changed to school lunches after about a month because (her words) they’re so good.
