School Lunch, what do you miss?

Why? Why? Why? did school cafeteria’s get rid of Salsbury steak and they yummy buttered noodles! tears running down face That was my favorite school lunch! I wish they would bring it back. I couldn’t wait for the day the cafeteria had salsbury steak. Oh how I miss that lunch. Bring it back! Now in our school the only lunch I get is Turkey & Gravy day. YUMMM! I work in my kids school so when Turkey day comes I am there. Now if I can only find a way to bring back salsbury steak and buttered noodles! What lunch do you miss/want to see come back?

I don’t want any lunch, but I’d love to get my hands on the chocolate chip cookies that my high school used to carry.

Do you remember the name of them? You may be able to find them.

I loved curly fries to death. I’m not much of a french fry person unless they are thin, seasoned or covered in cheese (like at Steak n Shake). But I didn’t buy lunch in high school because we had an account for lunch money and you used your student number to pay for lunch. Lunch and the snacks were all even numbered prices, but your account was always uneven. I never heard that they taxed our lunches so I got annoyed and bought snacks in cash from the music boosters instead or brought something. But I had friends that didn’t like curly fries so I got theirs.

I’ll bet they were Otis Spunkmeyer.
I miss our school’s meatloaf. They don’t make it anymore, now that menus have been shifted to District control.

Yeah the salsbury steak was from elementary school. I remember working for an amusement park and we would buy cheese fries. Man were they good!

Back in elementary school we had delicious hashbrown potato cakes. Never have I been able to replicate the goodness. Oh, and the chicken sandwiches were really good before they changed them and starting using some weird chicken. It disappointed my 2nd grade mind immensely.

Tomato soup and grilled cheese. Yes, I make it at home. The tomato soup is just as good, but the sandwiches don’t get that same crusty, completely greasy feel that they did in elementary school.

And I really like that stupid plain cheese pizza that comes in rectangular slices. I know it’s not gourmet cooking, but I really used to love pizza days.

Chicken poppers they were called, and they were my one weakness in the days of high school (aside from underage drinking). Little bits of fried chicken in a tortilla (the latter was almost always thrown away). Such tasty things they were, salty and crispy. Eaten with some of those warm cookies o’ th’ chocolate chip and nice big bottle of sweet, sweet cola they were easily the high spot of anyone’s day. The only better lunches were the one we sneaked out to a certain local sammich shop to pick up.

I don’t miss some of the things I found in my school lunches:

Ah, the anticipation of Goulash Day!

Reading this thread, I’ve just decided. I’m going to get a lunchbox. Preferably one that has a superhero on it.

this gave me the giggles!

Oddly enough, I’ve been thinking about pizza burgers lately. Some sort of tomatoey paste (with meat in it, I think), spread on half a hamburger bun, topped with cheese and baked. I’ve also been thinking about sloppy joes. That I can make, but I’ve not had taste quite like the old school cafeteria ones.

My high school served this breakfast sandwich – same basic concept as any fast food place, cheese and sausage on a biscuit. But there was something about these particular ones that was better. I think it was a better biscuit, better sausage, and more processed cheese. Hey, sometimes you want the processed cheese product, so sue me.

A few times over the years I have thought about going back to my high school just to see if they will sell me a biscuit sandwich from the cafeteria, and to find out if it is as good as I remember.

I would be very sad if it wasn’t. Maybe it is better this way.

I miss my school pasta bar. Nowhere else can you get a pot of pasta with 5 completely different sauces on it.

I miss the cinnamon-sugar sprinkled rolls my high school used to make. They may still make them, for all I know. The only way you could get one was if you went to the salad line and got them there. (You could either get one with your salad, or pay $0.15 each for them. On days where I wasn’t hungry, a carton of milk and a bun was just right.)

The rolls had just enough of a yeasty bite to give it a nice flavor, and just enough cinnamon and sugar dusting it so it didn’t taste like you were munching on a cinnamon stick.

Oh yeah, the pizza. And our school had the best #%&*@# chess pie ever. I made my mom call the school and get the recipe. (Me? Spoiled?)

I miss the french fries and gravy. Boy, my high school cafeteria had the second-best fries and gravy in town. Haven’t tasted them in 31 years.

I miss my grade school’s yeast rolls, and my middle school’s chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. Other than that, I really don’t miss school lunches.

Sometimes we would get a cup of ice cream covered with ice crystals and a little wooden spoon with which we’d try to hack our way through the solidified mass. Freezer burn was the primary flavor.
And occasionally the tater-tots didn’t totally suck.

That’s the closest to a fond memory of cafeteria food that I have. Grade school in the 70’s was a bleak place
