Elephant -- The Other Dark Meat

Well, this sucks. People are eating elephants!

Excerpt: **"‘The poachers took away the elephants’ sex organs and trunks … for human consumption,’ Damrong Phidet, director-general of Thailand’s wildlife agency, told The Associated Press. Some meat was to be consumed without cooking, like ‘elephant sashimi,’ he said.

"Consuming elephant meat is not common in Thailand, but some Asian cultures believe consuming animals’ reproductive organs can boost sexual prowess.

'Damrong said the elephant meat was ordered by restaurants in Phuket, a popular travel destination in the country’s south. It wasn’t clear if the diners were foreigners."**

There’s been some some local coverage, but I’m having trouble finding links except for this interesting commentary. I personally do not know anyone who eats elephant meat.

Wasn’t sure if this should go in Cafe Society or MPSIMS. :frowning:

And why wouldn’t they take the rest of the elephant while they were at it?

If this happened 20 years ago, you know when elephants are not yet endangered, it would have been okay. After all, killing an animal for food is generally okay since we’re on top of a food chain. That’s way better than killing the elephant for its tusks.

But now that they’re endangered, this is just sad and frustrating. Why can’t they just eat bull balls or something?

Well, they shouldn’t be killing elephants in the first place. They’re protected, or supposed to be. But moving on to eating them will just worsen the poaching situation.

That’s awful. I feel especially bad for elephants being hunted by humans after I read the National Geographic article that talked about how elephants have human-like reactions to trauma.
I can see how foreign tourists might support this kind of thing for the novelty of it, unfortunately.
