Elephant Walk

The circus came to town last night. The Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey circus, or whatever the heck the call it, had their annual elephant march from Long Island through the Midtown tunnel, along the streets of Manhattan to Madison Square Garden. And I went!

The crowd had to wait a while for the beasties to show up, (nine elephants, a herd of horses, and some miniature horses too) but once they did, those elephants MOVE. They were either dead stopped, or marching at a brisk pace.

I ended up adopting the pop and stop strategy-- stop in front of the elephants, take as many pictures as I could, then pop onto my bike and used side streets to race ahead of the procession and stop again. Unfortunately people were oblivious and kept stepping in front of everyone taking photos: I ended up with one good shot of a pachyderm, and several shots of horses.

I also had a long walk home since someone dropped their glass bottle in the street, and I ended up with a flat tire (booooo!)

Most amusing was the street sweeper coming up behind, since the herbivores were doing what herbivores always do…

I know Zev and some others were thinking about going. Did anyone else stay up for this bit of March madness?

I’ve seen the Elephant Walk in San Diego twice. It’s amazing to see them climb out the the rail cars. The doors are too short so they have to hunker down a bit to shimmy underneath. Then they straighten up to their full height. They line up on their own next to the cars and wait for the keepers to signal the all’s clear. Then off they go at a smart clip.
