Email Filtering

I would like to know if it is possible in Outlook Express 6 to filter certain emails. For instance, I subscribe to a newsgroup and in the subject is the word [Discussion]. Is there anyway that when outlook receives my email that it can automatically divert those messages to another folder I can view in outlook?

also, I would like to know how to filter spam into another folder which can also be viewed in outlook. I would rather use this than a third-party email filtering program.

Any instructions/help/pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated

I use Outlook Express 5 but I imagine it works the same. I am not at my home computer but try Options | Message Rules or some similar menu that will show Message Rules. You can then add the desired behavior. For example, create a new folder under your inbox folder called Cool Newsgroup. Then set up a rule that when you get a message with [Discussion] in the subject, move it to the Cool Newsgroup folder. (It would take a lot of time and space to explain this in gritty detail, once you bring up the Message Rules box I think it will become pretty clear how to do this.) (That assumes that by “newsgroup” you really mean “mailing list”. A newsgroup is a specific term for something else that is not email.)

You can also set up your own rules to identify spam, although it works only by scanning for keywords in the sender, subject, and/or message body. You will get false negatives and false positives. Once it sent an email from a friend into the spam folder because he sent it to a BCC list and the To field ended up being “undisclosed-recipients”, one of my spam keywords. Also, some spammers are getting more clever and sending out just an image instead of text, which you can’t scan for keywords.

Let me know if this isn’t enough info. I’d be happy to provide more details if needed.

It’s simple. Go to Tools–>Message Rules–>Mail.

Click “New”

Click the box for “Where the subject line contains…”

Click the box next to which action you want performed

At some point in there it asks you to input the text to look for

You get the picture.

I use this a lot, I have like 6 or 7 rules set up, very handy.

I’m trying to prove that I have more to add then just posting in sex-realted topics in IMHO, cut me a break guys!!
