Email question

Are there any web-based email providers that are able to prevent worms/viruses from showing up in my inbox? My current provider used to be very good at this, but they’re getting increasingly lousy. The same emails keep showing up day after day and it’s annoying. TIA for any help.

It’s probably not the virus/trojan filtering that’s the problem. More likely, it’s the volume of spam attacks - with a proportion of these containing viruses and trojans.

The most popular email providers (Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.) are most prone to viruses and worms, simply because “brute force” hackers can spam to “A@hotmail” through “ZZZZZZZ@hotmail” and get lots of hits. Throw in a little naming intelligence to catch all the variants of “smith@hotmail” and the success rate goes up even further.

So look for lesser-known email addresses - a quick Google search for “free e-mail” will turn up thousands. Throw in a virus/worm checker (also available for free) on your computer, and you should have fewer problems.

The problem is that it takes time to update antivirus to stop new threats (sometimes only a matter of hours – but that’s enough). Viruses now flood the net with messages, trying to beat that update time and will send to millions of addresses before the antivirus firms can detect them, update their definitions, and have them deployed.

So, ultimately, you’re going to get more viruses in your inbox no matter where you go. The important thing is never to click on them.

Spam is even harder to stop successfully.

Have you tried GMail?

I haven’t seen much in the way of spam/viruses/trojans in my inbox there. If you need an invitation, send me your current e-mail address and I’ll send you one.

Check out http://sneakemail.com they are very useful for avoiding spam.

That looks like it would work well. Thanks.
