Embedded Copper Filament Sheets

Has anyone ever heard of these? I read about them in my Hammacher-Schlemmer catalog yesterday. They claim to have 5100 copper micro-filaments per square inch of fabric (260 thread count, which is a lousy thread count). They are said to create a natural antimicrobial barrier for “healthier sleeping”, whatever that may be.

Is this complete BS? Come to think of it, do they develop verdigris with washing? (the catalog doesn’t say).
Straight dope on these, please?

Here’s the web page PageNotFound

In the description it says:

The only way you can get copper ions from copper is by oxidation, so yeah, verdigris formation is a possibility. I doubt it’s enough to turn you green, or even taste funny, but habitual annointing of the skin with heavy metal ions seems a bad idea to me.

What on earth is the purpose of this? (besides to sell sheets and “reassure” some germ phobic people)? Or is that it?

I’ll stick with my cotton ones, thanks. <–verdigris smile

Actually copper is pretty effective as an anti-microbial agent, however that has to be weighed against the fact that a dry cotton or synthetic sheet is not going to be very microbial in the first place, and itsy little fibers enclosed in a cloth matrix don’t (as far as I can see) provide much useful surface area to kill microbes anyway.
