I stopped in Wal-Mart today (it was the only place enroute to home that has produce) and got some endive. When I went to the cashier - not only did she not recognize it (not that surprising), but we both looked at the produce list (with pictures) they give to cashiers, and it was not listed. Nor was escarole, even though that was right next to the endive in their produce section, at 98 cents/pound.
She finally rang it up as “cilantro”, at 49 cents/pound. :dubious:
Hey, Wal-Mart, these are not rare items! They should make your list!
So funny! I have the same problem with fennel (bulbs). My grocery has a thingy where you can print out a sticker for produce–it’s called anise on that. I’ve also had problems with Swiss Chard and rutabagas. I probably couldn’t have identified them when I was a cashier-aged kid either. Oh well–I just realized last week that if I purchased cremini mushrooms from the bins they are half the price of the ones in the boxes–oh well . . .:smack: After typing this, I just remembered that when I was young the cashiers were middle-aged people–not teenagers! Damn, I’m old!
I’ve discovered that the cashiers at one of our local Treasure Islands constantly mis-scan mushrooms. The first time it happened, I noticed after I had left the store that I was charged for criminis (usually about $2/lb or so) instead of chanterelles (which are very distinctive looking mushrooms that go for around $10/lb.) Criminis and button mushrooms are constantly mixed up, but that’s somewhat more understandable (and they’re about the same, if not the same, price.) I’ve also had chanterelles charged up as oyster mushrooms. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever been charged correctly for chanterelles there.
