What is the order a woman should wear her wedding and engagement rings? Should the engagement ring go on first or the wedding ring?
The wedding ring is worn closest to the heart.
The way I learned it, the rings go on and never come off. Hence, the engagment ring goes on first, and stays on, and the wedding ring goes on after that. I realize that many people do, in fact, occasionally remove their rings, but that’s the theory.
The way I learned it, it’s only the wedding ring that’s supposed to never come off. Many women, in fact, take their engagement rings off frequently, when doing stuff (eg washing dishes, digging the garden) that they feel might scuff or damage what is, after all, probably the more expensive bit o’ metal of the two.
I personally feel my engagement ring is safer on my finger at ALL times, but that’s just Ms LoseStuffContinually talkin’ here…
I was advised when I got married that the ‘correct’ thing to do was to wear the engagement ring on the right hand as one trundled down the aisle, then you could slip it back on the left hand after the wedding ring had gone on.
The wedding ring goes on first, for both reasons already mentioned.
- “It’s closest to the heart.”
- That way you can take the engagement diamond off to wash dishes or mix meat loaf with your hands, but the wedding ring is supposed to stay on.
THe way my wife does it is engagement ring 1st and the wedding ring next. The reason for this is if one slips off her finger the more expensive one will still be there. And yes it has happened - she’s on her 2nd wedding ring.
