Just a small, fairly obscure, aircraft technical question.
Which is: Does anyone know if the engine boom on the C-119 is the same as the boom on the C-82? I know that the C-119 is a derivitive of the C-82, and that the fuselage shape and size was changed slightly, along with the engine itself being updated. But I don’t know if the shape & size of the boom itself was changed at all.
Can anyone help?
I suppose it depends on how much “change” you are looking for. The forward sections of the booms would have required structural changes to accommodate the new, larger engines. On the other hand, the general shapes of the booms are nearly identical in the C-82 Packet and the C119 Flying Boxcar. (The shape of the stub below the vertical stabilizers has a pronounced rake on the C-119, so they are not identical.)
The planes were nearly identical in height (c-82 = 26 ft. 4 in., c-119 = 26 ft. 7 3/4 in., a difference that could easily be accounted for by a strengthened landing gear), suggesting that there was no serious modification to the tail assembly. I do not know (and have not found any references to) the distances between the booms.
