England (rugby)

Your guys did good, they can hold their heads up I think. Well-played all around…except that bit when Percy was sent flying into the TV camera

True, but obviously heads go up after a try, and drop a little when one’s disallowed. So “meh” yourself. As a die-hard England supporter (and we do die extremely hard, necessarily) I get a little tired of seeing these desperately close controversial decisions go against us.

Time to retract that Pitting I think. Another day, Cueto would have scored, England would have given away a couple fewer silly penalties, the best team in the tournament would have been going home without the Cup (as happened to the All Blacks in '95). England played plenty of the rugby, Habana was a complete nonentity throughout. The Boks dominated the line-out and on balance deserved to win, narrowly, but considering the disarray English rugby’s been in since they won the last World Cup they vastly exceeded expectations, 'cos no-one thought they’d get past either Australia or France.

That was so a fucking try, the mofo cunts. Still, it wouldn’t have helped.

Apart from that, well done Boks. You deserved it.

Shit game, though.

ETA:

That was fucking hilarious.

True that - and he’d really been built up here, too.

Note to referee: “crossing” involves two players FUCKING CROSSING each other. Not two players running somewhat near each other at some point on the same day. FUCKING CROSSING.

Not that we would’ve won anyway. I wouldn’t have given the try if I were the video ref; his boot clipped the line on the way up before he grounded. I don’t think either team was really impressive enough to deserve the trophy based on the performance in the final, and I think SA were pretty undeniably the most consistent team of the tournament, so no complaints. Plus, if two months ago you’d said to England, “you’ll come within 9 points of the cup and have a quasi-legitimate complaint about the refereeing to keep you warm,” we’d’ve said, “what? You’re fucking kidding.”

And Habana wasn’t AWOL because he was rubbish, he was anonymous because a) we didn’t spread the ball wide enough to risk an interception, and b) we slowed down the ball from South African possession sufficiently that he was never going to be involved with the sort of space he enjoyed in other matches. It just wasn’t his sort of game, and barring moments of madness from England, was never going to be.

Exactly. And he did well in defense. No try. Congratulations Springboks!

This was never going to be a winger’s game - finals seldom are - so it’s not surprising that Habana was anonymous. Having said that, I remain to be convinced that he is the demi-god that the South African press sometimes paints him as…

South Africa played the better game (such as it was) and deserved the win, but for my part, I would rather they repeated their game plan from their last match against England - even if it gave a much improved English team the chance to get into the game - even (spit, spit) if it meant losing the match!! That would have been a game worth watching - last night, my wife fell asleep for the last five minutes, and I think she had the better deal…

Grim

Yep. You just know that’s going to be a “What happened next?” clip in 5 years time.
