Wow. Just wow.
Man, this thread was just wrong. It hasn’t aired here in the U.S. (well it has, but at 4 am on pay-per-view). My husband and I were going to watch it at a friend’s house at noon. I’ll have to be very good and not tell him who won.
Good game. Well done England. Credit Australia. I wanted extra time to end level 'cause no one in the pub knew what would happen then and then I was kinda inquisitive.
By the way, that Lote Tuquiri dude can’t half run. He gave the English dude about 5 yards head start and within 20 yards he was 5 yards ahead
What’s the World Cup?
I don’t live in the part of Oz where rugby is the predominant code, (and therefore wouldn’t have half a clue what the fellas are doing out on the ground) but I watched the first half and found it fascinating. And yeah, that Tuquiri guy sure can run like the wind.
But I fell asleep just after half-time and missed all the excitement at the end.
So I had to log-on here first thing this morning to get the score…I knew that you buggers would be first with the news.
Congratulations England, may you enjoy your Saturday night celebrations to the max.
Let’s see. World Cup title in '66, World Cup title in '03. You’re due again in '40!
And if '66 is anything to go by, we won’t shut up about this until then…
LMAO - ain’t that the truth.
I have England to blame for me being at work with a bad hangover.
If the aussies had won, my hangover would be a good hangover and twice the size of the one I’ve got now (all i can think of is bacon). I would still be happy though and revel in my own alcohol induced stupor but Nooooo…england has to go and ruin my day, no bragging or sledging for us, Noooo…instead we’ve got to admit defeat
Congratulations you pommie sods…
Was a good night though, our local was packed to the ceilings with Aussies screaming abuse at the five scared pommie backpackers that must have thought they were going to be buthchered and BBQ’d (mmm…BBQ) after the game, was all in good fun though and i think they had more than 1 or 5 drinks bought for them after the game was over.
Well done lads!
Maybe that’ll be the cricket world cup, then?
Quite a day!
Woke up early, watched the rugby final on TV from 9am, then a 3 hour drive to watch the Rugby League Ashes match (and well done Australia… by far the better team over the series. But who cares - we’re the World Champions in the PROPER code! ), then a three hour drive back, and I get in to find the repeat of the Final on TV!.
It’s now 1.30 am, and they’re just heading for extra time. I know it’s the repeat. I know what happened, and I’m STILL nerous!
Come on England!!
A great day for an Englishman - a brilliant day for an English rugby supporter. Of which I’m sure we’ll have many, many more this morning!
Nerous? It’s like nervous, only moreso.
It’s been a long and emotional day. Just leave it. Allright?!
I shake my fist at the sky and curse Johnny Wilkinson. But thats more of an aknowledgment that the English truly deserved their win.
Congrats, English dopers. You gave us an excellent game and I’d hope to find the same two teams at the next W.Cup final. (Though a different result wouldn’t go underappreciated.)
Good game, boys!
World Cup?? That’s that big honkin soccer, errr “futbol” competion, isn’t it?
The thing that really impressed me was the fact that English and Aussie fans were intermingled and not a display of nastiness among them unlike football where they are segregated and still cause aggro.
We are generally pretty good sports down under - even the Kiwi/Aussie clashes and the mighty State of Origin battles in Rugby League rarely result in any problems, certainly none on any noticeable scale. Supporters from opposing sides seem to intermingle with lots of good humour and ribbing of the opposition.
Occasionally there are problems, but nothing like other parts of the world.
I was very sad to miss the final - it was my dad’s 50th birthday party, and so I was restricted to occasional score updates…
I was even sadder about the result.
I’ll be even sadder about it on Monday - my boss is a POM, and he’s going to be rubbing it in big time.
Still, much as it pains me to say it, well done to the English team…
True, although I’d hardly call the atmosphere at Sydney Utd vs UTS Olympic pleasant - renaming the teams hadn’t made the slightest impact on the Croatia vs Greece rivalry last time I saw them.
