English Premier League 2017-18

Soton fires Pellegrino today. I guess losing by three to Newcastle was the final unforgivable indignity.

Not the Premier League, but Man. U. looked entirely insipid today going out of the CL to Sevilla at home. The Special One not so special…

I think Sevilla is a unique, fun team and I am surprised at how good Steven N’zonzi is at quarterbacking the team on the field. Taking out MU is a pleasant bonus.

I had some fun this morning when my beloved Leicester City FC put up a video with highlights from this day last year, when we put Sevilla out of the Champions League at the same stage. Even better is that we then poached Vicente Iborra from them to come play for us this year!

I had completely forgotten about all of that. Iborra is pretty decent and kinda still plays in that upright, very controlled style of Sevilla.

Several days ago, Simone Zaza, who played a few games for West Ham in the EPL a couple of years ago, made the worst dive in recorded history while playing for Valencia in Spanish La Liga. Zaza is the same guy who made the amusing penalty miss with ludicrous run-up at Euro 2016.

Had the pleasure of seeing an amazing first goal by a player who should have an amazing career - Ousmane Dembele, on Barcelona. Even more amazing than his perfectly-placed goal was the defender-dodging run (not fully shown here) Messi made to set him up.

So life-affirming, being able to watch that little punk every weekend.

Unfortunately, though, Messi has been a bit of a prick with Dembele over the last eight or so months, the former often chirping to the press about his discontent with the Frenchman after several games, speculating concerns about how injury-prone Dembele could be, and now pressuring him to join Arsenal. Dembele reported last February that he feels scared playing alongside Messi at Nou Camp. Last Tuesday was only Dembel’s second start, so it’s not like he’s been given much of a chance to prove himself since he joined last Sept. (Meanwhile Messi is fretting that Roberto might join Real Madrid, which would be an unfortunate loss for Barca, IMO.)

Some nice miletsones - two days ago, against Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League, Dzeko became the first player to get 50 goals or more in three of Europe’s top five leagues - Bundesliga, Premier League, and Serie A, and Cech set a Premier League record by getting his 200th clean sheet recently over Twatford.

Mohamed Salah with FOUR goals today in lousy weather. It’s just amazing watching him, I’m far from a football expert, but he’s one of the most exciting players I’ve ever seen.
