English Premier League and Football in General

Oh, and rumors have come out that Sir Alex may be resigning after the FA Cup. He was bitterly opposed to Glazer taking over the team and he has been in charge for 19 years. If he’s gone, things would get REAL interest. Cristiano Ronaldo may just decide to head for Spain (and become the next Galactico) and if that happens, ManU is screwed (IMO).

75% is the real target - at that point, he can delist from the stock market to become a private company and therefore have complete control. 90% is the point at which the remaining shares can be compulsoraly purchased.

That’s what they claim to hold, which means the reality is rather less. When the markets open on Monday, we’ll see how many shares are being traded.

The ManU ship is already taking on water, Ferguson is probably looking for a clean way to get out without admitting it is because he is past his prime ad without another group of wonderkids he is going to have a hard time keeping up with Chelsea and even Arsenal when they get the new Stadium.

Hi Guys,

managed to find a bar to watch the Chelsea game at (Mad Dog in the Fog). The place was packed out with American Chelsea fans. There was one other guy there who was supporting Bolton. Shame we are not in contention for CL now it’s the last game of the season, but still fantastic that we have qualified for Europe for the first time ever. Also I cannot believe that we have finished above Tottenham and I don’t get to gloat!! What happened to Owl??

He got fed up with being the only middle-aged Tory here, and decided to leave.

Glad you were able to find the game even if it was hostile territory. Hope you had a nice honeymoon as well, although obviously that’s secondary and a way behind the importance of making it into Europe.

Also, it was nice to see a Yank score a couple of goals today to help put Norwich out of their misery. Too bad they didn’t use him more earlier in the season.

What a day yesterday was. At some point during the day ALL 4 of the teams in danger were out of the relegation zone. I’m quite glad that the team that was bottom at Christmas (West Brom) have managed to stay up as we can now retire that damned statistic. Congrats to the Baggies.

Wow, what a finish. I had hoped that Norwich would be able to pull off the impossible and stay up, but looks as though Fulham gave them a sound thrashing. And props to West Bromwich Albion - the least likely to stay up at the start of the day and they made it.

Overall, I’m happy the way the season went. I was rooting for Norwich to stay up (disappointing), but I was also pulling for Everton to make it to Champions League (and finished ahead of Liverpool to boot!! - elated). Would be nice if they could pry away Green or Ashton from Norwich; Niemi or Crouch from Southampton; and Johnson from Crystal Palace.

46, and not deemed middle-aged. My day has been made!

Thats a good call on Everton needing a goalkeeper, eponymous. Richard Wright played the last two games and let in ten goals! OK, so the Arsenal game was a cauldron of shite all round, but he was severely at fault for two of the Bolton goals. I’d say he is finished at Everton.

Its funny how Nigel Martyn at 39 years of age, with a small, unathletic figure, just has what it takes between the sticks. Whereas big, athletic guys like Richard Wright, David James etc constantly f things up.

Andy Johnson really splits opinion. Twenty-odd goals, which is great, but only ten from open play. That said, he was the guy who won a lot of the penalties himself. Other than his pace though you can’t really say he has anything special talentwise, IMO. But its goals that count, not vague notions of skill or talent, so I guess I don’t know what I think of him

Fuck fuck fuck. Another year of playing the likes of Crewe and Rotherham. And we’ll fucking lose Davies & Bent. Fuck fuck. Maybe I’ll start my own thread, “English Championship League and Idiotic Complacency in General”.

GorillaMan, I join your pain - I’ve still barely recovered from Sunday. Let’s hope we’re both up again at the end of next season (and that Southampton stay down).

AJ - Maybe not the classiest player but he’s fast, works hard and gets results. He said before the end of the season that he’d stay with the Eagles and I hope he does (along with Dowie). We certainly didn’t go down through lack of spirit (that was Southampton).

If your team is Norwich unless you’re planning another relegation next year to League 1 then you won’t be playing Rotherham  However, we will (Swansea).
I’d like to put in a word for the lower leagues too, we can’t all support the big premiership teams but our team’s success is just as important to us as those premiership supporters- and we did achieve promotion so its been a good season for me.
Regarding the final Premiership games on Sunday I thought the BBC’s R5 commentaries during the afternoon was absolutely brilliant. They were switching matches and keeping you up to date with the changing league positions minute by minute as the goals were scored.
In some ways it reminded me of the days when all football matches at the weekend started at 3pm on a Saturday.

No, I’m most certainly not Norwich, thank you very much (check my location :stuck_out_tongue: ) But yes, in the drunken misery of last night, I forgot about our hand in sending those Yorkshire pretenders down to their rightful place.

I agree re. the Radio 5 commentary - I was out in the garden enjoying the sunshine, and listening to the games… quality afternoon all round.

Regarding Everton’s need of a keeper, I think you bought John Ruddy from the woeful Cambridge Utd - not sure he’ll be first team for a while though, I’ll expect to see him out on loan next season.

Poor result for the Tractor Boys - didn’t deserve to win it, by all accounts. Interesting to see if Preston can finally do it this season though - I reckon they’ve a chance of overturning West Ham if they can get to Cardiff.

Still some great games to come in the next few weeks - FA Cup Final, Champions League and the Play-Offs

Sadly, no, we didn’t. First half was great fun, but then they just stopped trying. Bent was half-hearted (as he has been all year), Westlake was as inept as ever, Shefki couldn’t keep running to three different positions the whole time, and the one-man defence couldn’t cope. And why the hell was Magilton subbed?

We’re all rooting for Derby now - it’d be nice to see George Burley give the cheating scum a kick in the teeth.

Sorry. I ought to have known. I know it’s all flat there so it all looks the same  but I was stationed at Honington many years ago so there should be no excuses, and also I spent a lot of my spare Saturdays at Portman Road. In those days they had probably the best pitch in the country and then Robson came along and they had one of the best teams too.

Betraying your age, methinks :stuck_out_tongue: …we don’t have a website called Those Were The Days for nothing…mind you, the Cobbold Stand is still in use (just about), so you’d probably still feel at home

…if Preston can overcome West Ham (got to put up more of a fight than the inept Derby County): Bolton, Blackburn, Wigan, Manchester United, Man City, Everton, Liverpool. That would leave the capital with just 5 teams: Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham and Charlton. Can’t remember Lancashire having so many teams in the top flight before (even when there were 22 teams). Just need Burnley and Oldham for a full house.

Cross-Pennine rivals Yorkshire can only lay claim to Middlesbrough. Strange to think that both Sheffield clubs, Bradford, Barnsley and Leeds have all played in the Premier League.

And there’s still Only One Bryan Robson.

The way things are going, I may be able to go to most away games next season without leaving the county!! sweet.
