Hmm.
I’ve always seen the posting of “DNFTT” as just as baiting of a troll as any other response to his/her/fuckhead’s messages. A troll posts in order to get a response. Stating “DNFTT” is a response, and sometimes encourages trolls to keep posting and pushing to see how often they will get “DNFTT” posted after them, or to whine and complain about how they’re not really trolls, but this big, bad, message board and its big, bad, evil, membership keeps them down.
Which is laughable, when you think about it. Don’t like the people here? Then why the fuck do you you want to post here in the first place?
Anyways.
My general strategy has been this- when I run into a new poster who seems a bit off- blatantly ignoring rules (written and or unwritten), or amazingly familiar with the lives/actions/attitudes of other posters (especially of other trolls), I make a snap decision- “Asshole or troll.”
Assholes are usually those who have made serious mistakes and carry with them a serious attitude problem. However, with discipline and the occasional sharp smack on the nose, assholes can be made to realize the error of their ways. Assholitude is merely a temporal quality for many of them. Filthy, for example, was not a troll; he was just someone who did not realize that there were different forums and what those forums were for. When he was told the error of his ways, he initially got confused and hostile; but since, he has calmed down, and thus his Assholitude has been removed. WebMasterUSA was also an Asshole in posting a “Moderator! Close this thread!” message every three minutes. When I- mockingly and patronizingly- explained the error of his ways, he got pissy and left, and remains an asshole in my eyes.
Trolls are completely different creatures, though. While assholes dislike being mocked, trolls enjoy any attention whatsoever. Assholes can be taught the errors of their ways; trolls actually reforming themselves and turning into valuable regular posters are very rare indeed (a case like Silo’s is unlikely to happen again for years).
Ergo, I don’t post a single thing in response to someone I believe to be a troll; I think even the warning “DNFTT” is enough to get a troll his/her/fuckwit’s jollies. Rather, should you see someone actually making the mistake of trying to have conversation with a troll, e-mail them or post a message to them in another forum, such as ATMB or MPSIMS with your evidence and rationalizations.
But if I think the person in question is an asshole, I mock.
At worst? I ignore assholes (not necessarily a bad idea), and occasionally give a troll some chow.
