Enron's Skilling, Lay Are Convicted

Story here.

Woo hoo!

With the legal talent they had, I was a bit concerned. Looks like the jury really came through. Bravo.

Hooray! I shared lieu’s concern and I’m glad to see the jury didn’t buy the lame “It was all Fastow’s fault” defense. “Criminalizing normal business procedure” my ass.

It was kinda funny on CNN, the were saying how the jury only took 6 days, in what was expected to be a several week decision, that that, and the fact that the asked no questions and sought no guidance that it looked like it would be an aquital.

Not less then 30 seconds later…

That is fantastic. Man, I hope they go to jail for a long time and are completely financially wiped out. Bastards.

Great! But who wants to take bets on how long both of them will actually serve in prison? 5 years?

Not even five. A lame duck Bush on his way out could very well pardon the both of them.

Good. I’ve hated Enron since the rolling blackouts in 2000. It’s really nice to see a jerk like Ken Lay get what’s coming to him.

Anybody know if these two crooks (Lay and Skilling) have money stashed abroad? Hard to believe they have any money left to pay their lawyers. Anyway, I don’t care about jailing them-just take every nickel away. Lay made a pious statement invoking God-what a piece of crap!

This is most appropriate, I think.

…Bugger. Can’t fault the man, though. Go find it here under “applaus.wav”, it’s a great site.

The BBC is reporting that Skilling could face 185 years, and Lay 45 years.

Is it really possible that they might serve only 5 or less?

Would that have any public support?

He wouldn’t need it. That’s the nature of the pardon system.

I was semi-joking. It just seems like these rich guys with their high buck attorneys always seem to get a sweet deal. Kozlowski got 8 to 25 yrs. With good behavior and such I’ll wager he will be down towards the bottom of that scale. Despite the fact that he conned over half a billion dollars from tyco.

Just saw on the news that they are expected to be sentenced in September.

Hey, it’s May now. Why the 4 month delay?

Would your average poor guy who robs a gas station get to wander around loose for 4 months after the jury finds them guilty? Last time I saw a case in court, the Judge noted that the jury had found the guy guilty, his bail was hereby revoked, and the bailiffs were to take him into custody and escort him to the jail.

In an ironic twist, sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 11.
I think they should get the max to be served, at Supermax, in adjoining cells w/ Missouwi so he can send all his waking hours lecturing them on the evils of capitalism.

No matter how long the get they’ll be living at Club Fed. I visited someone who was at Lompoc (where the Watergate gang stayed) for a white collar crime. The fence is knee high, they have tennis and basketball courts, a track, and a nice gym. They have (or had) horses for the prisoners assigned to the flower gardens, since they are a mile or so apart. (They grow flowers for florists.) The weather is beautiful most of the time.
I’m sure it will seem like prison to them, but it still seems pretty plush in comparison to other prisons.
Can anyone explain to me why our local power company is expected to pay Enron the entire bill for the power purchased at illegally inflated prices? They’re in court over it now, but, so far, it looks rather grim.

It wouldn’t need any. It’s one of the things that leaving presidents will do in their last days in office. In January 2001 an outgoing Bill Clinton pardoned a whole bunch of people, not too many of whom would have been popular choices if done while he was more accountable to the press.

If the Enron thing falls to the back of the memory of the public in a few years, Bush could do it on his way out, where the news is covering the installation of a new president.
