Enterprise Executives in Fear of Cancellation

Doesn’t your remote have a mute button?

I was under the impression that these were the only differences.

I was a fan of ST:TOS as a kid, and enjoyed TNG. DS9 left me cold and I stopped watching it about halfway through. Never could stand Vger. But Enterprise has had its moments. There were a few episodes that were truly great and many good episodes. But the Berman curse has kicked in again. He keeps trying to lay on some sort of artificial plot that comes out of nowhere that really ruins the show. The whole “time travel” thing was annoying but fortunately didn’t come up too often. But the “interstellar terrorists strike earth” thing has really ruined the show for me. I haven’t watched the show at all this season – every time I’ve started to watch an episode there’s been something so corny right at the beginning that I simply turn it off. Not worth the effort.

I think it is time for the franchise to die. This will be beneficial in several ways. First, with any luck, it’ll get Berman out of television, or at least out of anything I’ll ever watch again. Second, after time, I think people will be more able to accept and appreciate non-Trek SF, shows like Firefly. And who knows, maybe twenty years from now someone will think of a truly original way to resurrect the ST universe in a way that I will appreciate …

Okay, so you’ll make 3 episodes:[ul][li]the episode where Pander the Panda makes his (her?) guest appearance,[/li][li]the episode with the phaser-cutting phase pistols, and[/li]the episode where Hoshi takes off all her clothes[/ul]… but then what? Tars Trek would only last for 3 weeks!

Yea, but that third episode would be in syndication FOREVER.

Enjoy,
Steven

Syndication, hell. Pay-per-view all the way. I’d buy that for a dollar!

Well, the third episode would be a cliff hanger during sweeps!

Also, we have “Enterprise meets robot Jesus” “Enterprise meets genetically engineered Godzilla” “Enterprise vacations on Disney Planet, only Dwarves revolt!” “Mayweather is infested with a parasite that permanently makes him crazy, but not crazy enough to be forced out of the crew” “Lots of interesting crew people introduced” “New Amabassador refused permission to eat Porthos, starts war” “Porthos eats device from future, Archer must be shrank down to go inside Porthos and retreive, but also superintelligent Amoebas are after it, and so is a mysterious guy named Gary” “Hoshi” “Enterprise is suddenly transformed into a world where they are all actors, and must save their show from being cancelled or Enterprise is doomed” “Vampires” “Werewolfs” “Bears” “oh My!” “Hoshi” “Enterprise visits Oz” “Enterprise causes Selay/Anticon rivalry” “Romulan War” “Tellars revolt, Archer saves day” “Hot Andorian Lovin’” “Robot Hoshi” “Crew recieves transporter signal, turns out to be guy from 23rd century caught in time thing, but from an alternate one that gets changed” “Alien beasts rape the main crew, causing them to be impregnated with monster spawn that devourer their bodies from the inside out.” “Interesting crew people killed, as are other main characters, just for kicks” “Hoshi”

So what we have are two possibilities that would make Tars (and others) happy;

1> The series moves to HBO, where they can do nudity, swearing and excess violence, or
2> The series goes into syndication and is treated like ‘Highlander’, where they make a couple of extra minutes for the European version of the show. Usually containing nudity. They cut this for US broadcast, but include it in the Season DVDs.

In either case, no more ‘racy’ goo smearing bits where you don’t actually see anything. This time…we get to see it.

Then we need a visit to Risa and perhaps that planet that almost killed Wastely in TNG.

Frankly, Paramount needs to get rid of Berman and Braga and turn the show over to some new blood. That alone would probably add a million viewers for at very least, the first few episodes after the change-over. That would give them a shot at some better ratings.

What If Some Else Wrote Enterprise?
Gene Roddenberry - Wagon Train to the stars! But, make sure my own quasi-religious ideals of a utopia based on unchained technological advances gets included in virtually every script until I’m finally pushed aside and the control of the franchise of taken over by younger people more in touch with the viewing wants of modern sci-fi fans.

Bergama - We ARE the new blood you guys wanted. But now we just sit on our asses and watch the franchise deteriorate while making sure that time travel (our quasi-religion) gets included in every story arc.

Tars - Your time has passed, also. Now, you shall know real fear. And Panda.

As a big DS9 fan, I had very high hopes for Enterprise, and watched perhaps the first ten or twelve episodes. Although I enjoyed the premise and the performances of most of the actors, the shabby writing (especially in the weak characterization and flat dialogue) drove me off before too long. I don’t even watch it now if there’s nothing else on.

However, Enterprise might flourish more if it got the right lead-in audience from another show. I suspect that if it were on after, say, Firefly…

(Firefly, by the way, had a tremendous letter-writing campaign, a fan-bought full-page ad in Variety, fundraising drives for the Children’s Miracle Network, etc., etc., but still bit the dust, for the time being at least.)

This is very sad. No, not the fact the Enterprise will probably be cancelled. I’m talking about the shameful worn-out dragged through the gutter money whore that has become Star Trek. DS-9 should have been the last series for awhile. Simply stop making series and take a break for a couple of years. Voyager was about as enjoyable as having honey poured on your privates and trying to keep the bees off with chop sticks. ST:TNG was fresh because the original Trek was decades old and only the movies were recent. DS-9 was well written and took off from the success of TNG. Oh well, another good idea becomes a money whore for Hollywood. I hope it will be allowed to rest for awhile after Enterprise fails.

Cancel Enterprise? It’s about time. From episode 1 it was obvious to me that the show wouldn’t last the predicted 7 years. Scott Baculum’s acting is pittable, just as abysmal as it was in Quantum Leap.

Incidentally, there are no UPN stations in my area either. Over here, Enterprise is carried on the local FOX affiliate on Sunday evenings (before the Simpsons-King Of The Hill-etc prime time block). So it’s not like there isn’t the potential for viewers to tune in, if they wanted to.

And I’ll defend minty green’s critique of the theme song - I expect, even enjoy, that kind of fluff from a Bryan Adams album but not from a sci-fi show, especially one that claims to be a Star Trek.

This is true, but you can’t spell his name any better than I.

Been having problems with my dial-up from home–it’s not meshing well with the new boards or something. Gah, at any rate, at home my connection is so slow that I just haven’t been able to post.

I’m saddened to hear of the possibility of cancellation of Enterprise, but must admit that I’m not surprised. Starting with Voyager, TPTB in the Star Trek Universe seem bound and determined to run the franchise into the ground. Voyager was sent to the Delta Quadrant, completely out of touch with the Federation/Starfleet, etc.; no familiar names/places for fans to identify with. Then they turn around and are re-writing Canon Star Trek with Enterprise, especially with the Suliban and time travel. Time travel can be great, but they’ve just totally loused up the story with it, imo.

That being said, I definitely don’t want to see Enterprise cancelled–even if TPTB (Bermaga) have screwed it up royally, I’d still rather see it than no Star Trek at all. And I’ll join the campaign to save it.

Wow, to add something off topic, as I was typing this post up, I suddenly recalled a dream I had last night in which I met and talked with Stephen King about the whole idea of Multiverses–that is, multiple Universes. My brother and I had discussed this a few weeks ago, and he told me of a writer whose theory is that fictional works create new universes too–in other words, there may well be Star Trek Universe(s) out there. I almost shudder to think of it! I can’t remember what King told me about the Multiverse theory though! GAH!!!

The best one of those (IMHO) was Heinlein’s multiverse in which any sufficiently power writer/creator caused a new universe to be created.

But there are others.

The Trek franchise died with Voyager. That show drove away fans with each episode. It was insane to start Enterprise right after that. They should have waited a year or two befor thinking about another series.

Then of course they last two movies were not very good either. If you blow a even numbered Star Trek film, you need to retire.

Countless time the fans have been dismissed by the producers and they do things that will appeal to non-fans. But these things don’t appeal to non-fans. So new fans are not created and old fans are driven away.

B and B must go.

Mmmmmmm!

:smack:

The Multiverse:[ul][li]The Prime Material plane[/li][li]The Ethereal plane[/li][li]The Positive and Negative Energy planes[/li][li]The Elemental planes of Fire, Air, Earth, and Water[/li][li]Various para-elemental planes where the Elemental planes touch each other[/li][li]Various quasi-elemental planes where the Elemental planes touch the energy planes[/li][li]The Astral plane[/li][*]The Outer planes, where your soul goes after you die depending on your Alignment[/ul]See? All deep philosophical questions are answered in D&D.

They put two of my favorite things in the whole world – Scott Bakula and Star Trek – together, and couldn’t make a show worth watching. It deserves to be cancelled because it’s just plain bad.

I quit watching Voyager because it wasn’t enjoyable, but I was willing to give Enterprise a chance because of Bakula, the new premise, and my love of all things Trek. It wasn’t enough. I hope that there will be another good Star Trek series or movie someday, and I hope that Scott will get a part that allows him to show off his talents (maybe he’ll go back to Broadway), but I think it’s time to let Enterprise go.
