Enterprise - "Hoshi Effect" [Spoilers]

Like Picasso, I can see both sides of this issue. I don’t think it damages anything, but having to see something in every new episode? You can do better, manny. If they erased the memories, than it could’ve been ANY previously unknown species. or, a stand alone one of species.

Still, to me, it doesn’t undermine the high 6nish (possible 7) of this ep.

That was all total crap. Our immune systems react to foreign shapes - whether they’re made of carbon or silicon or californium doesn’t make the slightest difference. I’m sure a good writer could come up with an explanation for why an alien virus can’t be affected by our immune systems, but the explanation they gave was garbage.

WTF?

Your mom masticates Venusians.

How dare you not capitalize Mother!

Having just finished high school biology (w00t), I too agree the silicon virus was crap. If it works as a virus your body has to have recognized it as genetic material in the first place.
At least its good to know I’m more educated that the average trek writer.
I thought the episode was well done. 7/10. Malcom and Travis did well in this eppy I found. Or maybe they always do well and never get enough of a part to be able to judge. Ah well.

Man, I feel like I’ve missed a lot in the Ent threads. Between diploma exams and my free copy of KOTOR straight from BioWare I’ve had little time for anything else. But now with some time off I’m free to jump back into the insanity.

:dubious:

Greetings, Wearia!

I had given you up for lost, what with Moose stampedes and the Great Eskimo Rebellion. You obviously also survived the Walrus Spawning. Congratulations!

High School biology? How old’re you again? I’m not even 23 yet; I’m not supposed to be feeling old this fast.

SWEATY HOSHI!

I would like to say that Linda Park is looking more adult this season. She looked so young in the past that I felt pervier than usual but now I can put that behind me.

Well, I enjoyed tonight’s episode! And wasn’t it a treat to see Hoshi and Mayweather get some real dialogue?! This episode was penned by the Reeves-Stevens couple; I usually enjoy their work. Bravo to the make-up folks - Trip and Hoshi looked really bad at the end there. And of course I love seein Phlox, who figured things out to the surprise of the Organians. Didn’t find a treatment for the virus that worked, though. :frowning:

And coming next week … TELLARITES!!! Woo hoo!!! Yes, and the Andorians as well.

Zombie Hoshi!

Aha! That explains the idiotic “name dropping” reference to the Organians.

Should their be any interest, I am eviserating the episode in another thread:

Having just tonight viewed the rental DVD of Resident Evil: Apocalypse, I must commend you on this perfect observation!
Aes, Linda was absolutely fabulous in the range she showed in this ep. View this ep first when you get the next tape shipment.

No guts, no glory.

I have been given to understand that is what happens when you die. ^:)^

I liked it as well. I’ll admit to completely missing the silicon/carbon/virus problems, but otherwise there was some good stuff.

–Very nice scenes in the decon chamber between Hoshi and Trip; we got to learn more about them. Had to laugh when Hoshi suggested decon gel immediately. Funny story from Trip about the Thanksgiving turkey. Great story from Bad Girl Hoshi and her arm-breaking skills! IRL, Linda Park is a certified actor combatant, skilled in the broadsword among other things, so maybe they were giving her a little tribute. Nice delivery by Trinneer: “Well, you can’t stop there.”

–Bakula finally showed some real emotions besides Pissy and Angry.

–What was with Mayweather’s mouth? It kept moving and sounds were coming out of it…More lines than the guy had for the past half a year or so!

–I didn’t see Trip actually collapse, as they kept saying. It looked like he lay down on the floor of the Pod while coughing. He just couldn’t cover his mouth, could he? But then, this is the guy who always talks with his mouth full.

–I guess a possessed Porthos would have been too weird.

–Phlox is great: “Nononononono!” “Out, out, out!”

So, uh, anyone want to send me a CD Rom with this episode on it?

They need to make computers with VCRs in them.

I had an interesting reaction to this episode. Except for the dopey “silicon virus,” and except for the gratuitous Organian thing, I liked it a lot more than I expected to. I looked at the summary, I saw the “mysterious disease” and the “noncorporeal possessing aliens experimenting on humans,” and I couldn’t see how they’d be able to take Two Crappy Trek Cliches ™ and not have a Twice as Crappy episode. But they actually found an interesting angle, and an interesting way to use the cast, and I found myself actually enjoying it.

For the first 38, 39 minutes, at least. (An episode is 42 minutes.) About ten seconds after Trip woke up, the whole thing went to shit. I hated the last three or four minutes. Hated it.

Liked it, liked it, liked it, suck factor nine and engage! and straight into shitville. Damn.

One interesting observation: I like Archer a lot better when he’s not so close up all the time. He’s a good character to have at a bit of distance, a little more remote-Captain type. Beefing up all the supporting character roles in this episode had that effect, taking away some of the emphasis, and as a result Archer was more likeable, even though he wasn’t really all that different. Anybody else have the same feeling?

'Curs to me this is actually Three Crappy Trek Cliches.

This episode is better than I thought it would be. The writers are actually giving some backstory and character development to some of the characters. It still suffers from the cliche that human {pick emotion/characteristic - compassion in this case} is so much better than anything anyone else has ever seen.

I still felt Mayweather was stiff in his acting; Archer too, but there were some moments. Reed, Trip, Hoshi, and Phlox got in some acting I liked. Trip and Hoshi did some good acting combining conversation with being sick and tired. Subtle performaces that fit their character’s situation.

Overall the episode was good. It just suffers from their standard difficulty - they seem to have an idea to start and don’t really know how to end it. Here the Organians have a flash of insight due to Archer’s diatribe, they see the light, and everything is fixed. Overall still a good show.

Cervaise had a good point (or I’m making it up from things he said). If the writer’s would think up some character development for a character and then write up a show that ended with that, we would have an episode we could appreciate. The simplest form is: have a character overcome a fear of {X} by putting him/her in a situation in which they have to overcome {X}. Start with the end when a character grows and changes, and then make a story that gives us the growth or change. Here we have some backstory, which makes our characters more three dimensional, but still how have our character’s grown?

Chronological observations…[ul][]Are there really 10^123 moves in chess?[]Nice background revelation that Reed is the ship’s chess champ.[]When the Organians inhabit bodies - why do they have to glance knowingly at each other?[]Hoshi, as the second in a two person team, should have actually piloted a shuttle, not just trained.[]Re; “Andromeda Strain” - why are all movie references to the mid-20th century?[]Hoshi’s floating poker game fits her character, hurray. And she’s a black belt! Why didn’t she wipe the deck with those MACOs when they trained last season?[]I liked Reed’s “Rational intelligence, yes, which Archer has not demonstrated” he he.[]I still can’t see how the Organians can inhabit people, cause them to move and speak differently than their human hosts, and still say they are not interfering. When Travis questions Trip and Hoshi and acts all weird, sure the Organian can cover up Travis’ memory but not Trip’s or Hoshi’s - so they are interfering.[]Phlox was making a WAG when he spoke of a meteorite. Then Archer goes and finds it? WTF?[]Why do they always have blue lighting while sleeping? Especially with so much white background glare. I couldn’t sleep in that.[]Hoshi can override security protocols - give her more responsibilities![]Notice the sedative drops Hoshi but takes enough time for Trip to lie down.[]I loved the Trip/Hoshi-Organians switching to Archer/T’Pol to walk in on Phlox. Nice move.[]I liked the feeling of reality in Hoshi’s shock treatments. I have no knowledge of what it should look like.Organian, “Talking is a limited form of communication. We’re more advanced than humans” - Archer, “Not from where I’m standing.” Cute.[/ul]
