Entry field behavior

I know this is kind of trivial, but it’s been bugging me —

In the olden days, back through time immemorial, when you went to a web page where there was a field to enter some kind of information (search terms, user name, etc.) – the grey text already in the field would disappear as soon as you clicked inside the field to highlight it and enter something. (That is, if you have changed the default behavior of your browser not to automatically move the cursor to blank fields.)

For instance, at my hotmail account page, the field says “Anyone@example.com.”

But now, when you click inside the field, the grey text does not go away until you start typing. This is annoying, as the disappearance of the grey text was my cue that I had correctly shifted the highlight to the field and I wouldn’t be typing in vain. It changed maybe a month ago.

Does anyone know what I’m talking about, and why it has changed? It seems to be consistent across the net.

It’s in no way standard or consistent. It’s not browser behaviour; it’s Javascript implemented by the site designers, and its behaviour depends entirely on them.

Hotmail.com is the only site I’ve noticed recently with the quirk you’re referring to.

It’s hit or miss, I have to look every time now.

Will it be…Click n’ type or Click n’ backspaceeeeeeeeee.
