Since I spent a few hours looking up every tidbit a few months ago, I can say that the main scuttlebutt was that it’s a (presumably 2D, er I’m sorry “2.5 D”) platformer that involves drawing and erasing extra paths (and I wouldn’t be surprised if it also included weapons and tools as well).
Really? I just got a 360 and find it hard to get into the games (Resident Evil & GTA) because the controls suck so bad. Give me the Wii controls every time if there’s aiming involved.
Who says I don’t put games for all systems under this sort of scrutiny? My game library is not vast, but it contains very few mistakes. Anyway, Mickey having a paintbrush in hands means about as much as him having a chainsaw in hand. nothing. It’s concept art, FCS.
I’m not “cynical about its potential”; I’m saying that I didn’t enjoy many games I’ve tried on it because I find “wiimote waggle” to be a wretched and imprecise mode of control and an inappropriate substitute for a button press. If this game is, in fact a platformer, then it’s probably safe to say that some measure of running, jumping, etc, is going to be required. In general, these functions are poorly served by the Wiimote, and work better on a traditional controller because games like PLATFORMERS were designed with TRADITIONAL CONTROLS in mind.
When the game designers for the Wii start making more than a handful games that are actually designed with the Wii controller in mind, we may see some very interesting things. It the meantime, we’ll see games like De Blob and the Wii port of Okami - games that were obviously designed with a traditional gaming mindset and controlscheme in mind, are rendered an irritating experience by needless inclusion of motion sensing mechanisms.
Will I like the new games that may eventually emerge from the Wii (I -did- like the new Metroid Prime, and boomblox and cooking mana are entertaining for short periods of time)? Who knows. But I can say with some accuracy that there are many types of “traditional” games which I enjoy, since they are the reason I got into this hobby in the first place, and those games, universally, have not been as good for the Wii. Which is not to say they’ve been stellar on other nextgen platforms - the onslaught of brown/grey/dingy FPS games across nearly all platforms is also a source of great annoyance for me.
for those who care, IGN has the first Cinematic for the game. One thing I don’t like is Mickey’s voice at times, even though he doesn’t say anything. It doesn’t sound right to me. Otherwise, looks cool. There may be ads before the video.
I saw it at E3 and was pretty underwhelmed. They seemed to have pulled back from the dark subversive tone suggested by the early concept art. What I saw looked like a pretty generic Disney action/adventure game. (Although they were still hyping the hell out of it.)
I only made it to G on Wikipedia’s list before I ran out of words. And before anyone pulls the ‘yeah, but only half of these are any good’, the other consoles have their fair share of mature but crappy games.
It’s a “To Be Continued” and Mickey has obviously just arrived in the alternate universe. It’s really too early to tell if it’s going to be “Epic” or not. And hell, it’s Warren Spector. It’s not going to be about frollicking and picking daisies.
Yeah, I saw it at E3 this year too. Like you, I was very underwhelmed.
I was really looking forward to the game until I saw it. To be honest, the only reason I was paying attention to the game was because of the cool, twisted style it was going for. I had a feeling that Disney would squash that, though.
Now that the game has been out for a while, who’s playing it and what do you think?
Keep in mind that I’ve never been a hard-core gamer by any menas, but I love it! I’m really impressed by the graphics, the free-style gameplay is quite fun, and the dilapidated alt-universe Disney World attractions are a real hoot.
An instant favorite. I spent 6 hours playing yesterday!
I enjoy it, but I can say the camera controls are absolutely horrible. I can’t tell you how many times I have had to guess where I was jumping from memory.
I think most of the enjoyment comes from the look and nostalgia of it, the puzzle aspects are ok, but I am still early on. It’s no Zelda…
I got a copy for my DIL for Christmas. She was swearing at it last night. I’ll ask today what was frustrating her. Asking at the time would have been a bad idea.
From what I could see out of the corner of my eye, Mickey looked young and bouncey.
I am not quite finished with it, but I have loved the content of the game. I have about thrown my controller through the TV a few times, though, because of the camera issues.
I thought about starting a thread asking how such a high profile game gets released with such an awful camera.
I did my share of swearing yesterday. Mostly it was over one area where I had figured out how to get out, but kept screwing up the execution, over and over. Hugely frustrating! But it was that much sweeter when I finally got it, though.
Yeah, the camera is my biggest complaint too, but I haven’t found it to be a huge issue. Just that I can’t always get the angle I want, but I’ve been able to compensate OK. My disclaimer is that I haven’t played many comparable games, so I don’t really know what a good camera is like.
Epic Mickey is one of our new additions. I played it almost until out of the castle in the first level. (So not really at all, yet.)
Found the camera frustrating to the point that I turned it off. It looks neat enough that I know I’ll come back after playing through the other (less flawed) titles that we grabbed, though.
I got it and put in about an hour and a half thus far. Honestly, I’m not impressed and am not sure that I’ll be playing it again. As has been mentioned in every post, the camera is AWFUL. One of the worst things is that there is a “center camera” button but it doesn’t even work all the time.
Generally, most of the tasks and gameplay just don’t really do it for me. I’m not usually into this sort of game but was hoping this one would be different enough that I’d want to play more but it’s just not working for me.
