Epiphany: Transcendant Reality or All in Your Head?

This post somewhat parallels the debate over whether ideas and concepts are “real”, or not; but has a more particular focus.

When someone claims to have had some philosophical or religious revelation that completely changes their outlook, have they really discovered something they didn’t know before?
Or have they simply entered a new mental state, one they haven’t experienced up until then?
To make up an example, if someone claims that they now understand that “all men are brothers”, does that mean that they have indeed discovered that all men are brothers, or merely that they now understand how some people can think that all men are brothers?

You say I’m blind, I say you’re hallucinating.

My epiphany was a transcendant experience. If yours agrees with mine, then yours must have been a transcendant experience, too. If yours contradicts mine, then you are obviously delusional.

The best lack all conviction
The worst are full of passionate intensity.
