I’d put this in the Pit but I’m really not in the mood for a nasty OP-directed pile-on.

Oregon Law Is Delayed

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A federal judge on Friday postponed a state domestic partnership law that was scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, pending a February hearing.
The law would give some spousal rights to same-sex couples.
Opponents asked Judge Michael W. Mosman of Federal District Court to intercede after the Oregon secretary of state’s office ruled in October that they had failed to collect enough valid signatures to force a referendum on the law.
AP :
After the Legislature approved the domestic partnership law this year, gay rights opponents launched an effort to collect enough signatures to suspend the law and place it on the November 2008 ballot for a statewide vote.
But state elections officials said this fall that the effort fell 116 valid signatures short of the 55,179 needed to suspend the law.
The Oregonian :
The lawsuit was filed Dec. 3, asking the court to require the state to review the signatures, reinstate signatures found to be improperly excluded and certify the referendum.
In court Friday, opponents argued that people whose signatures on referendum and initiative petitions are thrown out should be allowed to challenge the decision, as they can in elections.
Attorneys for the state said that procedures verifying signatures are applied equally to everyone. The state uses a random statistical sampling method to determine whether enough valid signatures are collected.
Four days before it was to go into effect (one work day, in fact).
Guess I’ll start looking at rates for a trip to Canada again.

<sigh>
It’s like the Oregon Citizens Alliance was still around. Good grief.
What a bummer who are these evil people who have nothing better to do than to wreck somebody else’s party? It’s not as if gay folks don’t already experience enough hardship as it is. Foo on those ridiculous cretins.
This makes my heart heavy. I’m not optimistic that I’ll ever see this happen in my lifetime.
