This morning the radio was on on my bus to work, and the hosts were talking about how Eric Rudolph was finally in the process of being sentenced for the bombs he set at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
I only heard the first minute or so of this debate, but the hosts couldn’t seem to agree on whether he was a terrorist. One of them was arguing no because he was only standing up for his religious beliefs - that abortion is wrong and that the government shouldn’t support it. I wouldn’t be surprised if he continued to go on saying that he was an American citizen, wasn’t trying to start a war, etc…
It is in my understanding that somebody who committs acts of violence with the intention of causing panic in the public is the definition of a terrorist, and it had nothing to do with being foreign, and therefore Eric fits the profile perfectly (as well as the #2 person behind Tim McVeigh for the “not all terrorists are middle eastern” arguments that pop up everywhere)
…not that I’m taking the opinion of a local news DJ as the basis of anything…
The argument that he is acting in support of his religious belief makes him no less a terrorist than the 9/11 hijackers who were doing the same. I doubt there is avalid argument that he isn’t a terrorist.
I can’t imagine who would not think him a terrorist. (BTW, a very quick Google showed no hits for “Pro Eric Rudolph” or “Support Eric Rudolph.” Isn’t that nice?)
And thus spake the Lord, saying verily “Go forth and blow up the Gays, for they are indeed repugnant and foul. And thou mayest also detonate explosives in the vicinity of a party in a park, since their may by Sinners there. Or not. And it shall be in my glory and great mercy that thou mayest also set up bombs at clinics where women seek to terminate their pregnancies, for being omnipotent, I shall smite my foes and especially the employees of the facilities.”
He is the very model of a modern fundie terrorist,
with opposition to the gays, abortionists and feminists.
He knows the books of Kings and thinks Duet’ronomy quite practical,
from Sinai up to Galilee, in order geographical.
He’s very well acquainted, too, with matters most combustible,
He understands explosives, both the simple and the blustible.
About C4 and TNT and cordite and gunpowder,
the cheerful facts he knows to make a big kaboom yet louder.
He’s very good at integrating both these diverse interests.
He knows the scientific formulae of compounds that would kill the best.
In short in matters gay, abortionistic, or even the feminists,
he is the very model of a modern fundie terrorist.
He can point out all the dinosaurs that perished in the flood,
and blow up an abortion clinic and rejoice in the doctor’s blood.
In short in matters gay, abortionistic, or even the feminists,
he is the very model of a modern fundie terrorist.
I’m ardently pro-life and regard him as not only a terrorist but the worst thing that’s happened to our movement in a while. Glad they got him, glad he’s going away.
Eric Rudolph is a terrorist. I have trouble imagining anyone arguing otherwise. I mean, I believe you all when you say it’s happening, because I know there’s any number of morons and jackasses in the world. I just have trouble imagining it.
Rudolph said the bombings were done “to confound, anger and embarrass the Washington government in the eyes of the world for its abominable sanctioning of abortion on demand.”
And the AP says “Rudolph has said the attacks were part of a guerrilla campaign against abortion, gay rights and the U.S. government.”
What’s the argument that he’s not a terrorist? That he did it for Jebus? He seems to be admitting he was a terrorist himself.
well, I’m starting to think that maybe W is part of these groups of morons (anyone surprised?). His #1…nay…ONLY priority over the last four years has been fighting terrorism and punishing them to the full extent of the law (and possibly beyond). And yet he sat back and let him plea bargin.
I do think that a number of Americans have associated the word terrorist with the word muslim, as if they are one in the same, and are figuring since he’s one of our boys, he’s just a nutjob.
Even if some true believers felt that Rudolph was justified in bombing the Alabama abortion clinic, didn’t he deliberately set off a second bomb that was timed to explode a few minutes after the first? (in other words, just when the police would be showing up). Try ‘spainin’ that one!
