I do not consider a hot dog to be a sandwich, but I concede that technically it does seem to be one.
As for tortillas:
I’ve just eaten a breakfast burrito. It contained an over-easy egg, two strips of bacon, shredded cheddar, and Tapatio. It’s not a Mexican burrito, but it contains the filling like a little donkey.
Ok. The little Donkey referral bugged me. Just a little. Just sayin’

(This qualifies as a thing I never thought of or knew. Burrito=little Donkey)
Yes, but is a hotdog that is not really a hotdog a sandwich that is not really a sandwich? ![]()
Ersatz, perhaps?
It’s ersatz all the way down.
Thanks for the research!
But that ingredient list sounds a lot more like Ohio-Mex than Tex-Mex. Shudder. Ersatz indeed.
‘Burro’ means ‘donkey’. ‘Burrito’ means ‘little donkey’.
The name may have come from their resemblance to bedrolls or packs carried by donkeys. (According to AI, this is the most common explanation.) Of from the donkey carts some vendors used. Or it could be because burritos can contain a lot of things, similar to how donkeys can carry large loads. Or it may be a joke about unscrupulous vendors selling burritos full of donkey meat instead of beef.
Sorry, you made it worse.
Donkey meat?![]()
Not burritos, but I wrap all manners of cold cuts and cheese into a flour tortilla that I toast until it gets black spots and puffs up a bit on a naked gas flame. Ham and cheese is the usual, and I’ll throw some hot sauce on it, but whatever meats I have around. Yesterday, I rolled up a Polish sausage in a flour tortilla with some mustard.
Back when I had gas stoves that was a very standard lunch or snack for me too. Quick, good, and zero cleanup. That is just about the definition of a perfect home meal.
Love that.
You get the short end of that stick then. King Ranch Chicken Casserole is great stuff.
Just make it for real, not with canned soup and canned chiles. And smoked chicken or turkey is a nice improvement.

Gotta use the Ro-tel from a can, tho.
Mmmm…that metal can taste adds a certain umami, you can’t replicate.

Thanksgiving of course just came and went, and there were of course leftovers, and given the contents of this thread you can of course guess that I put some leftover turkey in a tortilla, all Earl-Of-Sandwich like.
I used to make turk-quitos. Roll up a bunch of shredded turkey in a bunch of corn tortillas, put them in a zip-top bag, and toss them in the freezer for a quick snack. Just pull a couple out, and fry in oil. (Eat with green taco sauce.)
