Escape from New York Appreciation Thread

I recently got through playing Metal Gear Solid and it had a character also named “Snake” who appeared very similar to the Snake from EFNY. Are they supposed to be the same person? Is this a character from some kind of series or comic?

I don’t know exactly, but I’ll bet it’s something like “Any movie with Harry Dean Stanton in it is worth watching if only to see Harry Dean Stanton.”

I saw this flick in the theater during the first summer I lived in NYC. I think it was the first movie that had advertisements stencilled onto the sidewalks…just Escape from New York! without any explanation. These were also the days when there were Alien Mind Control messages stencilled onto the walls in the Village.

Glad someone mentioned Adrienne Barbeau, but don’t forget the extremely cool presence of Isaac Hayes and Lee Van Cleef. God, what a cast. There were truly demi-giants in the earth in those days.

It’s one of Roger Ebert’s “Movie Laws”. No movie that includes an appearance by Harry Dean Stanton can be all bad. Take a look at his filmography and judge for yourself:

Harry Dean Stanton

One thing that I thought was wierd about EFNY was in the opening credits: “A Special Appearance by: Season Hubley”. What was the deal with her, anyway, and how did she get such a good billing from a 10-second throwaway scene.

Special appearance my ass. Try and find a picture of her. I can not find one anywhere.

Keith Berry: Near as I can tell, the new commentary track is a done deal, but not for legal reasons. I get the feeling that now, with these commentaries becoming an expected staple on DVD releases, the original is rather poor by comparison.

It is entirely possible, though, that some weird copyright problem could be involved, as well.

vertigo: I’ve been told (never actually played the game m’self) that Snake goes so far as to use the name ‘Plissken’ as an alias at one point in the game. I’d wager it’s just a pretty blatent homage to the flick.

Another tidbit that comes to mind:
I read somewhere that there’s a Snake Plissken mini series in the works (perhaps already on the shelves) from Dark Horse Comics, but I can’t recall the site where I read it, now. The plan for it was to cover the time between the two flicks, and wind up its run by showing how Snake ended up in “New Thailand.”

Season Hubley was married to Kurt Russell during the time EFNY was made. His career was taking off again, while hers wasn’t. WAG, but maybe the special billing was an attempt to draw attention to her and get her career going. Didn’t work.

Oh, that Harry Dean Stanton!

For some reason, when I read “Harry Dean Stanton” I thought of Dean Stockwell, which would make for a very different rule. :stuck_out_tongue:
