"Escape the Room" games

I’m torn on these. I love the concept of the games, but I dislike the majority of the ones I’ve played.

In my experience, the games are usually either geared towards kids in difficulty, or they’re nonsensical in their implementation (in escaping from a tv studio, why should I have to collect 4 stars to place in back of a monitor to get a 4 digit number to type in to this panel to get a red ball?).

What I’m looking for is a website - or just a few suggestions - for some “escape” games that are of medium to hard difficulty. I prefer that the actions kind of actually be linear, and related to the situation. I prefer geared towards adults, but not adult games. I tend to have a lot of downtime at work, and need something that isn’t NSFW. And preferably free.

You all never fail me. I await your suggestions.

I see work as the ultimate “Escape the Room” type of game. I play everyday. My usualy score is 8hrs. My record is 5hrs.

The best ones I’ve played are The Room (parts I, II, and III) and Forever Lost (also a trilogy). The Forever Lost games aren’t technically Escape the Room games. They’re more like Escape the Building/Town. They’re very challenging and well-made, though. I reckon you’ll like them.

I thought this was a reference to IRL escape room experiences, which I would highly recommend.

Hmm, my message didn’t go through. Have you tried Mysteries of Time and Space? (MOTAS)?

Nope. I was unfamiliar. But I’m going to look into them tonight

I like the Cube Escape series. Weird, surreal, and occasionally creepy. If you play them in the order presented, there’s a sort of story(or at least references).

ETA: I should add that some of the solutions are non-linear, but it fits with the tone of the games.

I heartily agree with The Room. Fantastic design, creative, challenging and well worth your time.

I started a thread last year about “Elements” from game designer Neutral. Kept me busy for several days.

Neutral’s games do have a lot of traditional room-escape puzzles, so it’s entirely possible that this might be exactly what you’re* not* looking for.
