Previously a lauded Mac-only title, the makers have finally ported it over to Windows.

And after mucking about with it for the last couple days, I see what all the lauding was about. It’s good. Real good. Vast freeform spacefaring goodness that I’ve been wishing a game would do right for ages now, but especially after the pretty but very shallow Freelancer. It was a joy to register it.
Bugger. 70 megs. And I’m on a cap at the moment.
The original Escape Velocity was the most fun I ever had on my friends Mac. It was like a top down Privateer with shed loads more content. What other game gives you the option of buying either a really cool small fighter ™ or a big honking battlecruiser?
Wow, I remember loving the original EV to death… even wrote a plug-in for it.
70 Megs is too much for a modem line in one connection, though… Anyone know of a download tool (for Windows) that lets you download a large file and keeps your progress if the connection drops? Internet Explorer doesn’t appear to have such an option, and Netscape 7 seems like it should have that option, but it automatically shows “100%” when I get disconnected, even though the file is not anywhere near complete. When I try to download the file again (upon reconnecting), it asks me to replace the file, and I have to start at 0% again.
Anyone know of a way to get past this?
GetRight (www.getright.com) is a good friend to all of us still on dial-up.
I see there’s also plugins that let you play the original EV and EVO through EVN, so that’s added grooviness. I’ve had to strongly fight the urge to install it on my work computer.
