ESPN Classic's "Cheap Seats"

Anyone else catch this show? I saw it for the first time 4/1/04 1 am.

This show is MST3K and Sports put in a blender.

I want any and all information availible that fellow dopers can give me.

Man I need more of this… this is pure gold.

I can tell you that the Sklar brothers, Randy and Jason, are very talented stand-up comedians. I’ve seen a couple of their shows, and laughed quite a bit.

I haven’t seen Cheap Seats yet, but it’s on my list. Near the top.

[I hope this isn’t interpreted as a thread resurrection, more like waking up out of a coma.]

One of the funniest episodes of Cheap Seats just aired, “Superdogs, Superjocks.”

You can catch it on ESPNClassic on Sunday, October 3, 2004 at 12:30 & 3:300 AM ET; and on Monday, October 4, 2:30 AM ET.

If you haven’t seen it, yet. This is the episode to watch.

Peace.

That’s the right description, and I’ve watched a lot of the show… I don’t know. It’s a funny show, but I can’t shake the feeling that it ought to be funnier than it is. If the MST guys or somebody else was doing it, I think it could be really hilarious instead of just getting the occasional chuckle.

I think MST3K had more than its fair share in the spotlight. I have heard that they even made their own movies near the end of production. And don’t get me started that I KNOW a MST2 K existed back when Comedy Central had the show. But I digress…
I think that perhaps the (Sklar is it?) Brothers would like to be funnier, but I suspect that ESPN also wants to maintain that it is a sports network over a comedy network. It is on Espn Classic after all. I think a certain percentage of the footage needs to be ‘unretouched’ as it were, to maintain the ‘classicness’ of the sports. Also, Sports are harder to make jokes at than Movies… especially when movies have gone further using “tools of the trade” and have more than one genre than just sports. The limit of the genre to just a one trick pony would limit the jokes as well.

My favorite is the spelling bee. And the freaky girl drowning in her polo shirt who sniffs her fingers in between saying each letter of her word.

And she ends up winning the thing

Sports can are really funny, if edited right.

Because of the less-than quality editing in this show, unfortunately, the brothers have to extend a good joke a little too far. Kind of like Mae West doing an extra octave too long in some lyrics while trilling ‘Twist and Shout’.

You do digress. They made a MST3K movie, yes. Not a movie to make fun of, it was pretty much just the same show with a feature film budget. There was no MST2K, and I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about. Much less what this has to do with anything.
