Australian rules football people, in case you didnt know.
I’ll take it your a bulldogs fan?
Good grief! It’s bad enough I have to put up with my noisy ranting flatmates while the game is playing! Do I have to see it on the boards as well?
Does this mean Essendon won’t be in the Finals? This is their first loss, isn’t it?
Damn. I went last week, but this was better. Libba, what a champion.
I still think the Dons will win.

Could you explain the scoring system to an ignorant American?
Looking at the OP, it would appear the final score was 92-81, with the scoring taking place over 5 periods? But how does a team score 14.8 points? Not to mention the fact that the numbers don’t even come close to adding up…
Help?
I watched this game. Wasn’t it bloody marvellous? I have been waiting for someone to knock Essendon off since about week five of the season.
ReservoirDog, Aussie Rules Footy is a unique game that has everything Gridiron doesn’t - action, speed, excitement, athleticism, blood and guts…
The scoring system is quite simple. At either end of the field there is a set of four posts, the middle pair are taller than the outer pair. A ball kicked between the middle posts scores a goal, which is worth six points. A ball kicked between a middle post and an outer post scores a behind, worth one point. A ball that crosses the goal line which is not kicked, or was last touched by a player of the defending team, also scores a behind. Scores are always read as goals + behinds = points.
Hence the score line from the game in question was:
Essendon: 12 goals, 9 behinds (81 points)
Bulldogs: 14 goals, 8 behinds (92 points)
Incidentally, as the game is played over four 25 minute quarters, it is customary for to full final score line to show a progress score from the end of each quarter.
Hope that explains it better. BTW, I think Aussie Rules is broadcast somewhere on TV in the US. If you could get a chance to look at a couple of games, you’ll probably work it out for yourself, as well as enjoy a spectacular sport.
Thank you.
I’ve been waiting for them to fall for ages now too. But I greet thi sloss with mixed feelings. Now they’re going to be hungrier and now what defeat tastes like. I think I would have preferred to see them lose in the finals. To be honest (and it galls me to admit it) I can’t see them losing the flag this year.
sigh
dpr, I’m inclined to agree with you, but it’s nice to know they can be beaten. As a non-Victorian, I have always gone with the underdogs.
