I know that in the US there’s been some debate as to what the literary canon of works should be, but AFAIK, there’s not been a country by country list of “essential” works in all fields of the arts by artists in those countries. (Of course, watch someone post a cite which proves me wrong.) But I think that it would be neat if Dopers posted what they thought were the best works of art in any medium from a particular country. This would be a helpful research tool for Dopers wanting to learn more about a particular country if they had a handy reference guide for artists from that country. Dopers could post not only works from their home countries, but lists from countries they had lived in or studied extensively. Also, they could post links to images of statues, paintings or related sites for their responses. IAC, it would be a way of continuing the fight against ignorance.
I realize that this might not be something that most folks could slapdash together, but anything someone could post would be helpful for folks in other countries. (After all, I have zero idea as to who might be considered the greatest Australian writer, which is a shame, since we speak the same language.)
