etomology of "handicapped"

I have read this might be “hand in cap” implying a disabled person reduced to beggary. Can anyone verify this…seems like it should be “cap in hand”, unless its to be understood as an order for you to put your money encrusted mit into the cap. Comments? I apologize if this has already been dealt with in the message board, I did a search and came up with nothing.

Thanks!
