Euro 2020 (in 2021)

Not sure I understand the lol, but this is the result of having the 5 subs. Totally changes the game. If the better teams can get their best players into the game after the lesser team has already been worn down defending, that’s a huge advantage. Normally, you have to keep at least 2 subs in your pocket in case of injury. This also may explain why there haven’t really been any upsets.

I was laughing at the wonderful absurdity of a team so loaded in talent that it could bring three players of that caliber off its bench.

Gotcha. I interpreted the decision as: we’ll hold the fort down for 30 minutes with some of our bench players (although still world class talent), and then insert our best players with an energy advantage. And we’ll still have 2 subs in case of emergency. Now, I wasn’t able to watch that game, so this was just my take from the box score. If they were just ineffective on offense prior to the changes, then of course that’s also a possibility (but would be odd to do so early in a normal sub game). But I imagine this won’t be the last time we see something like this in this tournament.

England v Scotland is a HUGE game in the UK. The oldest international fixture in the world and still as big as a final would be.

It’s going to be like a local derby game, lots of passion, hard tackles, nervousness. England are favourites on paper, but in a game like this anything can happen.

I’m excitedly looking forward to this game. England-Scotland sounds so good, one of the real international classics, with longer history than any other international game.

Czechia-Croatia was a bit of a dud, though. Sounded good on paper, but especially Croatia were disappointing

Obviously, even the weather does its level best to make the match a real British one.

I’m surprised how Scotland is able to keep the match level.

Isn’t rain the great leveller though?

I don’t know, the pitch still looks good to play. And technically, the Scots haven’t looked worse than England.

If Hungary holds on to their lead this will really throw a wrench in the group of death. Especially if Germany win later.

Mbappe doing Mbappe things.

100% Hungary fouls France in the box at the end, should be a PK, but the Hungary player fakes an injury. That’s robbery, IMO.

France still almost guaranteed to go through and Hungary still almost guaranteed to go out, but the result is likely to play into gets first/second/3rd in this group.

Germany is taking Portugal behind the woodshed. Can’t defend wide at all. Good thing France don’t have a bunch of skilled athletic wingers on their team…

That was very surprising, but I suppose 2 1st half own goals could cause some strategic chaos. The Group of Death remains the most mysterious of all, so the late Wednesday games will be a fun watch before the knockout rounds begin.

Not that it’s possible in this year’s Euro, but what happens if every team finishes 1-1-1 in the group stage? The tiebreak criteria would determine the standings, but would a 4th place team be considered a 3rd place ream for the purposes of determining if they advance? If not, then there is a chance that a team with 3 points can advance over a team with 4 points, which doesn’t seem right.

And Lewandowski has his first goal!

I think it’s just the third place teams that would be considered.

Also pretty sure it’s just 3rd place teams.

Spain need a Mario Mandzukic or Olivier Giroud.

What a great comeback for the Danish team after the first two lost troubled games after the Eriksen incident. 4-1 beat down of Russia, an enthusiastic home crowd (which gives me goosebumps after all those quiet games), and now Denmark suddenly in the round of 16 with merely one win and three points.

And with Wales next, the Danes will feel they can get through to the last 8 if they can keep Bale and Ramsey quiet.
