Euro 2020 (in 2021)

He wasn’t even guessing, and I disagree. There were a couple of saveable, especially the one on the ground to his left. It looked like he was waiting for a panenka attempt.

Just want to say this was one crazy football day. Nice. I enjoyed it a lot. Though the Belgian internet connection leaves room for improvement.

As an Arsenal fan I want to ask who this Xhaka fellow is. Looks good, we should sign him.

Arsenal? Now? Sigh… It’s your thread, alright, but, seriously?

Haha. Sorry. But they are my local team!

To expand on my Borussia fetish, another ex-colt.

There were a couple of worse penalties than Mbappe’s tyat slipped past the goalkeeper. Mbappe is an amazing young player but it has been a bad tournament for him. 99 times out of 100 he takes that chance in extra time on his stronger right foot and slot the ball in the far corner rather than let the ball go to his weaker left foot which made the angle tighter and blast it.

I think Pogba had a pretty good tournament but his mistake for the third Swiss goal will be analyzed against him because he is one of those players who the press are eager to stick into.

So this is the end of the Löw era after 15 years. I’m glad about it (not glad that we lost, just that Löw goes), he’s been a lame duck since the WC win of 2014. I hope Hansi Flick will give the team new sparks. There’s still potential.

ETA: I’m also happy about Gareth Southgate beating his Wembley penalty trauma from 1996. Well, I’m a Germany fan, but I think he’s a cool and eloquent guy who deserves this.

England wins on PKs in a game in the last World Cup and now beats Germany. Are these even the Three Lions anymore?

I hope this is not too hard, but I can’t resist:

Bye bye Löw
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I’m-a gonna cry-y
Bye bye Löw
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my Löw goodbye

and then:

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung
Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game (ha!)
It’s easy :yum:

Nothing you can make that can’t be made
No one you can save that can’t be saved
Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time
It’s easy

[Chorus]
All you need is Löw
All you need is Löw
All you need is Löw, Löw, Löw
Löw is all you need

PS: Del Bosque did not get the right moment to quit either. Nobody seems to get that right, ever.

I am also quite happy that Löw is gone and while I respect Southgate, I wish that Germany would have exited against any other team, because the English tend to be horrible winners. (I just have to look around my neighbourhood…)

As long as no one wipes his butt with the German jersey like Koeman in 1988…

Well played :+1:.

England is benefiting from playing in the weaker side of the bracket, going forward. They won’t have to face the likes of Italy, Spain or Belgium until the tournament final itself on July 11, should they get that far.

Emil Forsberg is on fire today! What a fine footballer.

If England don’t make the final from here it will be a failure.

Only team in the competition that got to play all three group games at home. The draw allowed them to play Germany in the last sixteen at home. Ukraine are their opponents in the next round and England should win that on overseas soil before returning to home soil for the semi final against either Denmark or Czech Republic, and the final will be hosted in England too!

Footballing wise they have a tremendous squad. France, Belgium, England and Portugal were my picks for the last four before a ball was kicked. They had the best first eleven and overall squads. France and Portugal are out already and England’s route to the final will not cross paths with Belgium.

They’ve not played great football to watch but defensively England have been very solid. Not conceded a goal yet and the confidence of knocking out an old rival should carry though against Ukraine. Plus Harry Kane finally scored to get his tournament going. I don’t think he played well still but he is a clinical finisher when a chance is presented. They just have to find a way to get the ball to him more.

Just got a feeling that the game England are expected to win will be one of the hardest. But difficult to deny that Ukraine is a wonderful opponent for England.

Until the 70th minute or so, Sweden was the far better team, then their power began to wane. In extra time they had a red card (and this was the right call, though he played the ball first, but you cannot go into a tackle with your bare sole on your opponent’s knee height) and simply were overpowered by Ukraine.

I think this kind of pressure contributes to why England so often put in tepid “afraid to lose” performances.
Let’s just take it one game at a time. I enjoyed the game against Germany but they are far from firing on all cylinders.

I have to say, that’s such an English thing to complain about.
