Euro 2020 (in 2021)

Spain have just scored the world’s most magnificent own goal, and the tournament should end now because it will not offer you anything better.

Damned! I was on the road today from Berlin to my home and missed the regular time in the Spain-Croatia match. Just got home in time to watch the first half of extra time, and still saw two Spanish goals. Is this already the match with the most goals in the history of Euro?

France beat Yugoslavia 5-4 in 1960 which is the record. That was the first European Championships match ever played.

Since 1960, say the Belgian commentators. In the first four games with the most goals there was always a Yugoslav team involved, they claimed, but was too absorbed to let the details sink in.
You missed an incredible own goal. Bescheuert, would be the German description. And UEFA attributed it to Pedri! Poor guy, it was no fault of his at all. It was the keeper’s, and Pedri should be given, if anything at all, an assist!

Too mayn own goals in this tournament, if you ask me.
What? You didn’t? Oh…

I never saw Pepe play without thinking the same.

I’ve read about it on kicker.de. Can’t wait to see the roundup of the match on ZDF after the France-Switzerland match.

Beautiful header by Seferovic! 1-0 Switzerland.

I’m rooting for Switzerland. It just occured to me that with Elvedi, Sommer and Embolo they are 3/11 Borussia Mönchengladbach, my club. And with Zakaria still on the bench, a fourth colt.

Damned, while composing this post they missed a penalty shot.

And just now, the equalizer for France.

ETA: Crazy!!! Benzema for the second time in two minutes, just after the saved penalty. Crazy three minutes, all while composing this post. The first contact by Benzema before his first goal was a thing of exceptional beauty.

Sorry to post so much in a row, but though I’ve missed much of the Spain-Croatia spectacle, France-Switzerland is another crazy match with loads of goals, and it makes up for the miss. Nice game to relax to, with some cold beers, after an exhausting eight hours autobahn drive in 30 ° C heat. I’d love to see a Swiss equalizer and extra time.

ETA: And here it is!!! Crazy matches…(though until now no own goal in this one). The French defense is a mess.

This could be the best day of international football I’ve ever seen. Two tense 0-0s on the menu tomorrow though.

What an insane day of soccer. 3-3 at the end of full time for both.

And in both games, the underdog goes up 1-0, only to go down 3-1, and then scores twice at the end to bring it to extra time.

Disturbing defense by France. I feel like the French players all wanted to get their goals so kept pressing when ball control was called for. Now they have to turn it on again.

Yes I agree - they were having fun, assumed the game was won, and lost their defensive discipline.

And to round it up for me, another Borussian, now for the French side, Marcus Thuram, enters the pitch.

And the French should not be giving Xhaka as much space as they have been. He’s pulling all the strings for the Swiss.

Sorry, didn’t happen. It seemed like Coman was done and had to be substituted for Thuram, who prepared for a substitution, but Coman carried on. I was confused for a moment, but I’m excused because so much happens in this match.

ETA: and now Thuram is in for Coman, finally.

ETA: what a beautiful last save by Yann Sommer! And now penalties!

What a ballsy penalty by Pogba!

Thuram beats his clubmate Sommer (who never saved a penalty in his life…)

Now Yann, save the fisrt penalty of your life!!!

AND HE’S DONE IT!!!

Lloris was useless in the penalties. But great win for the Swiss, and very well deserved. Now I’m all-in on Italy.

France missed Kante tonight. Even though he was on the field.

All penalties, except for Mbappé’s, were unsaveable.
