OK, taped four videos worth of Garbo films from TCM, the pick of the litter. Anyone who wants to borrow one, just ask Cajun Man for my e-mail, and I’ll send it along. Be sure to circulate these among yourselves!
Tape One
• Love (silent, 1927)—Garbo and John Gilbert in modern-dress Anna Karenina.
• A Woman of Affairs (silent, 1928)—Based on scandalous Michael Arlen novel The Green Hat. With John Gilbert, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.
• The Single Standard (silent, 1929)—Garbo as society-flouting heiress.
Tape Two
• Inspiration (1931)—Garbo as naughty Paris artist’s model. Oooh-la! la! With Robert Montgomery.
• The Kiss (silent, 1929)—Friend of Garbo’s husband falls for her; tragedy ensues. With Lew Ayres.
• Wild Orchids (silent, 1929)—Bored wife on vacation falls for Javanese prince. With Nils Asther.
Tape Three
• Queen Christina (1933)—17th-century queen abdicates for love (lots of lesbian overtones!). With John Gilbert.
• Grand Hotel (1932)—All-star extravaganza, with Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery and two Barrymores!
• Mata Hari (1931)—In terrific Adrian designs, as WWI spy. With Ramon Novarro.
Tape Four
• Ninotchka (1939)—Dour Russian agent in Paris (her only good comedy). With Melvyn Douglas and the wonderful Ina Claire.
• Camille (1937)—Cough, cough. Garbo acts poor little Robert Taylor off the screen.
• Anna Karenina (1935)—The talkie version, with Fredric March.
Well, I know at least three Dopers who told me they wanted some tapes—hope I didn’t do all that VCR-programming in vain! I’ll bump this again on Monday . . ."Ay t’ank Ay go home now . . . "
I had expressed interest in seeing some Garbo movies in your earlier thread Eve and exchanged e-mail with a fellow Doper regarding having them forwarded to me after she was through with them (my apologies to her for not being able to remember her name at the moment). Mrs. L is definitely interested in tapes three and four; I’d probably want to see the first two also. (The silents might be a little difficult for my wife with her vision problems).
I’ll check in again later after I’ve had some sleep and can think more coherently.
In order to keep this thread alive, I’d just like some clarification that this is strictly a loan and that these tapes (which are most likely copyrighted material) are not going to be copied in any way. If this looks like it’s going to turn into a tape trading thread, I’m going to have to close it down.
Don’t worry, Euty–I am just (out of the goodness of my pure little heart) going to loan (I expect them back!) these tapes, with no money or goods in return.
On the other hand, my goddam e-mail is down, so I have no way of communicating with anyone till Groupwise gets its act back in gear.
