Eve, that’s a most exhaustive list. I can’t think of a single addition, and there are many on your list I didn’t know had died until I read it. Kudos for the research.

Thanks.

I lost five pounds off my fingers alone just from the damned bold and italics coding . . .

You missed the Pope.

:smack:

Actors and actresses, right.
If you’ll excuse I’m gonna go flagellate myself now.

Don’t let me interrupt, but he was an actor at one point. I wouldn’t say it’s where he achieved his greatest fame and he was no Jon Voight, but…

So, what clips of them will be played at the Oscars?
I’ll bet on one now, Captain! There be whales here!

Here’s my guess for the In Memoriam segment at the next Academy Awards:

Anne Bancroft, The Miracle Worker.
Eddie Albert, Roman Holiday. (Better choice: Captain Newman, M.D.)
Simone Simon, Cat People.
Ossie Davis, Gone Are the Days!
Teresa Wright, Mrs. Miniver.
Virginia Mayo, White Heat.
Geraldine Fitzgerald, Wuthering Heights.
John Vernon, Animal House (“Double secret probation” scene)
Barbara Bel Geddes, Vertigo.
Brock Peters, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Sandra Dee, Gidget.
Ruth Hussey, The Philadelphia Story.
John Mills, Ryan’s Daughter.

What intrigues me is the (mostly) advanced age of the actors and actresses. If I’ve counted on my fingers correctly, there are 109 in Eve’s list, and 40 of them were over 80 years old, another 24 were over 90 years old, and there was one centenarian. That’s nearly 60 percent of the total above 80 years old.

Certainly, that’s not a scientific selection, and it would make an actuary shudder to draw conclusions from such a small sample. But on the surface it least it suggests that treading the boards is not a bad profession if you’re looking for longevity.

A few more:

Dave Allen (born 1936) Irish comedian

David Kossoff (born 1919) British film actor
Lee Eun Ju (born 1980) Korean film actress
Mariana Levy (born 1966) Mexican telenovelo actress
Brigitte Mira (born 1910) German actress

Jim

When did Johnny Carson Snuff it?

Date of death (details)
23 January 2005

Now for a really tough assignment, do the list of famous actors and actresses who were still dead in 2005. (And “Roll Call of the Dead” would be a great name for a play- you’d only really need one speaking part.)

Richard Pryor, December 10, succumbed to heart attack after years in declining health with multiple sclerosis.

Prolly in jrfranchi’s link, but let’s keep it in the SDMB family, hmm?

Not to sound disrespectful or anything, but these lists work a lot better if you think up a new euphemism for “died” for each new entry.

The two from the list who surprised me (I somehow missed the stories of their death):

Charles Rocket (most famous for saying the “F” word on SNL)- he cut his throat in a cemetery in October, it seems.

and

Michael McGrory- the giant from Big Fish.
I sent a sympathy card to Leon Askin’s widow, incidentally, and received a very lovely response (in English).

One near and dear to my heart was Michael Sheard (Admiral Ozzel in Empire Strikes Back, Hitler in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), August 31, 2005
