Event Insurance

I have some relations who are starting a wedding-venue business on an attractive farm. Naturally they want liability insurance in case the mother of the bride stumbles down the stairs and breaks her leg, or whatever.

But the insurance company won’t show the contract they have given a quote on. They will show a list of exclusions, but not the full fine-print policy document until they actually buy the policy.

This doesn’t give confidence, especially as you keep hearing stories where insurance companies notify people who have paid premiums for years that they weren’t covered for what they thought.

So how would you protect yourself here from insurance-contract shenanigans?

(The quote is for about $1200 for a year for a million dollars in coverage.)

They could require that anyone renting the venue provide their own liability coverage. Most homeowner policies can provide short-term event coverage for a rented venue. The insurance company will provide the renter with a certificate of proof to show the venue owner that coverage is in place.

I find it hard to believe that the insurer is behaving so stupidly, but if they are, get a different insurer. There’s more fish in the sea.
