I have been carrying an EpiPen for about 9 years, but never had to use it (thankfully). Ever have to use yours? What does it feel like? Is the relief as fast as they claim (seconds)?
For those not in the know, Epipens are epinephrine injectors for people with severe allergies. For more info here is a website about EpiPens.
I’ve never used one, but I wanted to mention that my grade nine teacher had one. I was ready at ANY INSTANT to rescue him, and in fact, often eyed up the drawer it was stored in. Sadly, he didn’t get a bee sting during my entire time at the school.
People, the world is a safer place with lolagranola around.
I don’t have an EpiPen, but I was once rushed to hospital where I had to get injected with epinephrine when I had an anaphylactic reaction to my best friend’s cat. The reaction is pretty much instantaneous. The closest thing I could compare it to would be if you held your breath just to the point where you were about to pass out and then let it go - but magnified about 1000x.
I had a patient bring her epipen in on an office visit one time. She wasn’t sure how to use it, and asked me to review it with her. I’d never used one, but that wasn’t going to stop me from helping her! I thought I’d put it in the locked position, and said to her “now I’m not really going to do it, but to use it, twist to unlock here, then push it against your thigh like this!” and of course, it injected me.
Took about 90 seconds for my heart rate to double.
