I’ve seen a lot of threads about Dopefests and people on the board planning to get together. So I got curious: anyone ever meet someone and later find out they visit the Straight Dope? You know, sort of “You’re on the SDMB? I’m RandomNumbersAndLetters!” “Really? I’m PretentiousLiteraryReference!” That sort of thing.
Ya know, that is funny. I have not met a doper without knowing it however I have often thought that one day I will be out in public and doing something rude, get online and find a story about what I did in the pit!
Odd coinkydink – listening to one of the afternoon talk guy on the radio here today, he referenced a personal story told by someone here on one of the threads. Not sure if that means the DJ is a member (or more likely a lurker), or if the story told by the poster was actually an urban legend being retold. I’m going to check out both scenarios and get back…

Weirddave came to visit me at IKEA last summer, and I had no idea who he was for about three minutes. Not quite what you asked, but oh well.
I was mentioning the board to a buddy at work when he first started, and he said he had read the message boards a few months before but never signed up because he didn’t have time to post.
Once, I was convinced that a certain poster was a boss of mine at work. The poster’s name was eerily similar to the manager’s, and a lot of the stuff the poster said reminded me of him. He even argued with me for a few posts about an issue I knew my manager and I disagreed on. It freaked me out for a while, but I’m pretty sure now it isn’t him.
No, but I did see someone bring up the jarbaby “colorful word for body part” + “hardware” = “creative insult” formula on another forum today. Said a friend had told him about it. So somewhere in the world, it seems a Doper called a member of the Warren Ellis Forum a “twatlevel” or something, and the meme is spreading like wildfire.
If this gets big, jarbaby (if you’re reading this), can I tell people I know you?
