Ever stumble on a bug/exploit in a massively-multiplayer online game?

Ragnarok Online- I didn’t find this exploit, but I wanted to so badly. There was an item duplication exploit. At the time, there was a disturbing level of price-fixing by player merchants. Health potions were rather expensive, especially for low-leveled players (who needed them the most). I had this evil fantasy of using the duplication exploit to make a bazillion health potions, then form a guild and have all my guildmates sell health potions at 1 zenny, destroying the economy in the game. Never happened, but it was fun to fantasize about.

Planetside- There was a bug in the game involving certain HP laptops. When running the game on these laptops, the game ran about 30% faster. This meant everything your character did, he did 30% faster- movement, reloading, shooting. I wasn’t even aware it was an exploit. To be honest, I thought I was just getting better at the game. I went from having horrendous kill ratios (sometimes getting killed like 50 times for every kill I made :frowning: ) to doing really really well. I found out with great regret that this was because I had been using the equivalent of a speedhack.

While this may seem apalling, before I was aware of it nobody really knew what was going on. Nobody was accusing me of being a cheater. I can honestly say it was two weeks of sheer bliss. I had an infiltration (predator-like invisiblity) suit and would blaze around the battlefield, using the knife (actually it was a LOT like the Predator  ) and carving up enemies left and right. It was not unusual to see a kill spam for a powerful weapon like an orbital strike, but to see 6 guys get killed by knife deaths was rather jarring. Also, having ‘the flash’ degree of speed, being able to outrun tanks, or getting in an aircraft and flying at nearly the speed of light was pretty fun while it lasted

I have found several in SPACE - Glory Through Conquest. The most memorable was when I found I could put engines on a planetary defense system and turn it into a deathstar. These things are huge, with great modifiers, and are cheap to build in order to allow newcomers to have a chance to defend themselves against more developed empires. I reported the bug and ran a fleet of these things into an alliance of one of the game developers to make my point. It was fixed REAL FAST.

Now I am helping ColdFireStudios work on their next project Dark Age. I can’t wait to see what bugs I can find there. Hey, it’s all in the name of testing. I am too honest to exploit it because I would rather beat another player on my own merit than run him over with an exploit and claim victory.

Several in EQ.

In EJ, you could fear stuff into a corner of City of Mist, and it would get stuck there and not be able to fight back.

In FV, you could fear stuff into the zoneline of LOIO and it would get stuck there as well.
Also in FV, not sure if this is really a bug. But the Drolvargs and Pilgrims/butterfly things would always attack each other. You can nuke the pilgrim/butterfly once, making sure not to get kill shot and bad faction, tipping the balance over to the Drolvarg. The Drolvarg would then kill the pilgrim/butterfly and you would get a Drolvarg that was nearly dead. Kill the drolvarg and you would get full exp.

One in WOW. Not going to say anything more other than it involves water

I’m not sure how relevant this is to the topic at hand, but it’s a great story:
In the beta-test of Ultima online, some dude totally assasinated Lord British.
I laughed my ass off.

I’m not counting MUDs as massively-multiplayer online role-playing games, even though I suppose they could qualify. Given their generally amateur development status, bugs are common and oh so much fun to find.

In City of Heroes, some powers would buff the caster for, say, five minutes, but the power would take six minutes to recharge. I noticed that if a power is activated when a player has already started zoning, it does not lose its charge, and the player can use the same power immediately upon entering the new zone and double-stack its effects. The problem is that it’s impossible for a player to trigger powers manually while zoning.

However, some powers cannot be activated when the player is jumping, and if the power is triggered while the player is soaring in an arc, it will be queued and will activate when the player hits the ground. So, run up to the zone border, jump in the air, trigger the power, hit the zone boundary, see the “Please Wait” screen appear, hear the power trigger, arrive in the new zone, trigger the power again for double your pleasure.

I also found other combinations of powers that allowed infinite chaining of powers (specifically, EMP and Atomic Blast) with proper timing. You could do one, then the other, then repeat as long as you wanted. The downside to this is that Atomic Blast stuns the player and drains all mana when it works as it’s supposed to, so once you fail to time everything, you’re standing there extremely vulnerable. But then, everything around you should be stunned, dazed, or dead, so…

I found out that in City of Heroes, the “camdist” setting accepted negative numbers, pushing your camera in front of you. Telescopic X-Ray Vision. Totally cool, and great for spectating on monster fights, but… well, reported it. It let teleporters do really sick things.

Burrido, tell me about the water one. My friend and I stumbled upon something water-related and I want to know if it is the same thing. Email or AIM me if you don’t want to advertise it.
