Everyone attending NASCAR throws their garbage all over one another??

Not sure about the forum here, Mods feel free to move as appropriate. I’ve done some Google searching and found nothing about this.

I was talking to a friend last night who as part of his job is required to visit several different NASCAR tracks during famous race events.

He told me that when you’re attending NASCAR races, it’s considered just fine for the people in the rows above you to throw their trash on you, and for you to do the same to the people in front of you. Half eaten burgers, empty drinks, nacho cheese, chicken wing bones, etc etc. He specifically mentioned that there’s a place called the “chicken bone seats” or something that are called that b/c it’s right up against the track so you get everybody else’s garbage thrown on you.

Needless to say, having never been to a NASCAR event, I had no idea that this was SOP, and I’m pretty amazed that it would be.

I’m also rather surprised that I’ve never even heard about this. I can imagine at least some reporter somewhere using this angle to score a cheap point about rednecks or something.

So, is this true? It’s OK to throw garbage on everyone else in the stands at a NASCAR race?

If you can provide a Cite, I bow to your Google Fu.

I just googled: Chicken-Bone Seats. If you try ‘Chicken-bone Section’, I bet you’ll have even more luck.

[hijack]What happens when a beach ball bounces out onto the track?[/hj]

Yeah, close seats in NASCAR equals bad seats.

I can see one section having this tradition, (kind of), but my understanding from my friend was that the garbage throwing isn’t localized to one section of just chicken bones - rather that the entire stands throws garbage all over everyone else. Is that true?

It’s a lot easier to thrown stuff down then up.

How come this never gets shown in the TV shots of the crowd?

I have been to many NASCAR races and never experienced this. Media coverage and fan reaction to those instances where “fans” have reacted by throwing things on the track has been very negative. Come to the “dark side”–attend a race–you might get hooked. It’s a lot of fun.

I go to Nascar every year, compliments of my brother-in-law. I have never had this happen once.

I’ve never been, but my husband has had season tickets to Chicagoland since they opened and he’s never mentioned it, for either the NASCAR race or the IRL one. The kids go with him for practice and qualifying and they’ve never mentioned it for that, either.

My dad once got free tickets to the Coca Cola 600, in the cheap section. We looked down towards the area between the front row and the fence, and by my estimation the aluminum cans were knee deep. We didn’t see any flying chicken bones, but there was a constant rain of cigarette ash from behind us.

We stayed about 15 minutes.

I’ve been to NASCAR events in Chicagoland and Daytona and have friends who have seen them at Bristol, the Brickyard, and Vegas Motorspeedway.
We’ve never seen anything like these or have even heard of it.
But yes, most seats are deafening and people close up get a lot of track debris on them.

And I don’t think I’ve ever seen a beachball bouncing around in the crowd. It would get confiscated too quick since it would be pretty dangerous if it ended up on the track.

“Each of the levels of Minas Troney showed their contempt for the levels below them by dumping their garbage on them. (It is not known upon whom the lowest level dumped their garbage, but it is conjectured that it was not dumped,. but eaten.)”

I’ve been to about 20 various NASCAR races and have never seen this. Several of the races were in crappy seats at the Michigan and Chicago Speedways. I’ve never been hit with a chicken bone.

That said, a guy next to us absolutely trashed his area with peanut shells this year in Vegas. This was in an expensive section though.

I’ve been to several drunk red neck parties. It was my observation that throwing up was a particularly popular activity.

What… like shots?
ETA: Oh man… well Tapioca, birds of a feather, eh?

OK, works for me. TO clarify I wasn’t talking about throwing garbage on the track; rather throwing garbage all over everyone else in the stands.

Sounds like this doesn’t happen, except for the “chicken bone” section. Thanks all for clearing this up.
