That was a pretty lame red card in the US vs Nigeria match at the 4 minute mark?
I wonder if the referee received an email from a friend in Nigeria?

What happened? I didn’t catch that, I’m watching Holland-Japan. And it’s making my brain bleed, like, hell, this is bad. Babel just came really close to scoring an own goal. Mind you, he plays for Liverpool whereas one of the better Japanese players plays in the Dutch second league. Drenthe plays for Madrid, Makaay used to play for Bayern, etc. etc.
I sure do hope we beat the Japanese but at this rate it’s not going to happen and if it does happen it would be far from deserved. But then, it happened before that a team didn’t shape up until it reached the quarterfinals and beyond that.
It wasn’t the ref, it was the player who was lame. Stupid pointless cheapshot.
That match was a crossbar away from being one of the best matches I’ve ever seen. Man the US was good, but so stupid.
Yes, it would have been nice to **score ** a last minute goal rather have a last minute goal scored on you!
They must have just done it recently, because during the World Cup in June they almost all had black hair. Maybe it was to go along with the red uniforms?
Not since Aladdin Sane competed, anyway.
Cancellara stomped all over the mens time trial and brought home the gold for Switzerland. Time trials are not the most exciting viewing, but still awesome to see the guy in his prime riding like that. Bring on the weekend and the velodrome.
Any boxing fans catch today’s action? British supervheavyweight called David Price got a very iffy stoppage in his favour, ref waved it all over after a fairly innocuous second knockdown. I reckon he would have done the guy anyway after 2 knockdowns but he caught a break - his opponent was the favourite for gold as well.
The semi-final of the men’s 90 kg judo tournament had Russia vs Georgia. Georgia won the match by ippon and went on to win the gold medal.
Much as I would like to pit Nigeria for spam and for beating the US, an elbow to the face on a 50/50 ball right in front of the ref is gonna get you carded. It MIGHT have been yellow, but the red is defensible.
It still sucks that we are out of it.
As much as I admire the Nigerians for having balls and continuing to play an exciting game, they did almost give it away. They should have gone a bit more conservative after they were up 2-0, and it should have never been one crossbar away.
Damn fun to watch though.
And here I see that Taiwanese fans attending plan to skirt the ban on their country’s flag by displaying the Burmese flag instead! Because it looks similar.
I have passed the ping pong threshold.
On edit: One of the Poland players has only one arm.
The Men’s 100 Free was a heck of a race. It’s always my favorite swimming event.
Damn Alain Bernard is jacked. Holy $hit.
Hopefully, someone here knows about balance beam judging and requirements…a typical woman (using the term loosely) on the balance beam will do a death-defying series of somersaults – followed by a ridiculous-looking string of poses. Tumble spin leap…arms up, arms down, hands out, stick out your butt…tumble spin leap. Are those required elements of some sort?
Day 6. Feeling pretty good. Despite being pretty sick of gymnastics, I’m still enjoying watching the games.
Observations:
I’m having trouble remembering any athlete’s names.
The one-armed Polish chick won easily. I almost said “handily”. Table tennis is surprisingly video-friendly.
I don’t understand the rules of judo nearly as well as I thought I did. Greco-Roman wrestling is easier to follow.
Fencing is oddly hypnotic. I watched an American named Keeth Smart (I had to look it up) in the saber competition. Smart’s opponent lunged at him, and Smart floated back just out of range without visibly moving his feet. Then, when his opponent was fully extended, Smart just casually flicked his saber across his opponent’s chest. It occurred to me that had they been using real, sharp swords, Smart would have cut that guy in half.
From watching handball, I know why they invented soccer.
I’ve watched softball, but no baseball or basketball so far.
For some reason, archery is more fun to watch than the shooting competitions, even though they’re very similar in format.
Sailing is a lot more fun to do than it is to watch.
No baseball this olympics.
Also, I can’t believe you don’t like watching sailing. I don’t get out on a boat much these days, but I still stay glued to the tube when it’s on.
I wish this stuff would come out on DVD, so I could Netflix it. As much as I’d like to, I just can’t sit around with the TV on all day.
I know I can stream a lot of it off the NBC site. Kudos to them!
Ooh, I just saw Mark Spitz. Handsome silver man.
Yes. From Chapter IV, Section A, Subsection 10g:
I’m pretty sure it’s still in this one, It’s not out till next time. I watched Cuba/Canada earlier.
