Here is a thread about the 2016 Summer Olympics

I just watched the opening ceremonies, cuz I like the opening ceremonies. Especially the parade of nations. I spend most of the time looking up the tiny countries on my phone while they quickly march by. Never heard of Kiribati before! I love everyone’s costumes and uniforms.

I liked the performance that Brazil put on. Natives, rainforests, cities and dancing. Felt like Brazil to me! According to the announcers they had a very small budget compared to other cities but I think they did a lot with what they had.

So, if anyone wants to chit-chat about the 2016 Olympics (and not about whether or not we’ll watch or how the IOC is corrupt), here is the thread for that.

I watched as well. I give the Opening Ceremonies a B+, the coverage on NBC a C-; more than in most years they seemed to just shut up and let the pictures tell the story.
I was dreading the same old Djibouti joke that they trot out every four years; but then they either changed it or just screwed it up.

The flame with that mobile chandelier thing behind it is the most beautiful Olympic Flame I’ve seen in a long time.

Was it just me or was that biplane flying backwards?
The Flame really is something special. Here’s an animated GIF for those who haven’t seen it in motion yet.

And a brief article about it and the sculptor, Anthony Howe.

I’m always curious which sport the flag bearer competes in. I missed 3-5 countries, but here is my count:

No surprise, Track and Field leads with 55, followed by swimming with 22.
Third was Judo with 19

Surprises? Sailing with 11, Fencing with 6, and badminton with 5

That’s how Santos-Dumont built the 14bis. It’s called a canard configuration, with the elevators up front. The Wright Flyer had that too.

The thing could only fly straight ahead or with careful, skidding turns, not the controlled, banked turns the Wrights used, so he doesn’t get general credit for the first powered flight. But Santos-Dumont does deserve more credit than he gets outside Brazil.

Looks like members of the USA men’s basketball ‘accidentally’ ended up in a famous brothel.

The woman broadcaster on NBC was just plan irritating. What’d she tell us, about 16 times that the teams are marching in Portuguese alphabetical order? And they seemed like they couldn’t go five minutes without sucking Mike Phelps’ dick. Jesus, get a room already! The ceremony itself was nice but not overdone, I think a smaller budget may have forced them to edit more judiciously. The only thing I could have done without was the samba dance between the flag raising and flame lighting. It was late enough, just get on with it!

Haven’t seen the opening ceremony yet. Since it was on tape-delay due to NBC sucking, I decided I’ll just catch it off the iPlayer later tonight when there’s no live sports on.

US gets its first gold medal for 2016 in women’s air rifle.

And the USA wins the first gold medal of the Rio Olympics! Congratulations to Ginny Thrasher in Women’s Air Rifle.

Nifty! Thanks for filling me in.

It’s odd watching Olympic boxing without the fighters wearing headgear.

I watched some of the women’s rugby. I really like rugby! I like the speed and the constant scrambling to make something happen. I wish it got more exposure in the US. I need to follow up with finding the games after the olympics are through.

Yes, Rugby Sevens is one of the fastest sports in the world - and demands the ability to run, pass and tackle from every player.

There’s a World Series for you to enjoy, plus there are individual tournaments that have been running for decades.

The Hong Kong Sevens, the Middlesex Sevens and the Border Sevens (where it all began in 1883) are all worth a look.

As far as the Olympics goes, the USA men’s team are seeded 6th (the women are also seeded 6th.) The USA men’s team features Carlin Isles, who has a time of 10.15 for the 100 metres!

You young whippersnappers…
Headgear was illegal in Olympic boxing until 1984. I’m not entirely sure why; I think the Soviets didn’t want it used for some reason - maybe its coaches taught the boxers to go for the forehead.

Sorry about the back-to-back posts - missed the edit window

Question: in sevens, why does the scoring team kick off? Is it that much harder to recover your own kickoff in sevens than in 15-a-side?

The team also includes New England Patriots special-teamer Nate Ebner.

And they’re the defending Olympic champs.

Well we all knew they had budget issues. I had to smile when the bikes led each country in. Made me think of Pee Wee Herman.

It’s a refreshing change from the over-the-top nonsense we saw in China and the UK. Not everything has to be a Superbowl half-time over-budget freak show that could feed a lot of people.

Oddly enough, 1984 was when I started watching Olympic boxing. I would have watched in 1980, but stupid boycott

Table tennis is exciting and the coach looks like Woody Allen.
