Here is a thread about the 2016 Summer Olympics

USA looks like the world’s biggest polo team with those logos on the blazers.

What is the crowd saying every time Hope Solo touches the ball?

“Zika”? I’m not watching the game but somebody said that was happening in the US’ first game.

It sounds like they are chanting one thing when she is getting ready to kick, and then something else as she kicks. Doesn’t sound like zika to me.

(my phone wants to correct zika to Zima. Man, that is out of date)

Yeah, Solo posted a few Instagram posts that were mocking Brazil, re: zika. One wearing a bee keeper hat & veil saying she’s ready for Brazil and the second showing a ton of bug spray covering her bed. Brazilians are not amused.

French gymnast snaps his leg on the vault (yes, the video is graphic. Poor guy.)

Possession is way more important then territory in 7s. But I think it’s easier to recover your own kickoff anyway.

That gymnasts dislocation was horrific.

It is a great game, although the worldwide talent pool is pretty shallow, especially in the women’s game.

Most of the pool games so far have been walkovers. Australia has won its two games by a combined score of 89-0, New Zealand has scored 83-5 over two games, and Canada’s combined total is 83-0. On the other end of the scale, the Kenyans have a total score of 7-92, Japan 0-85, and the poor old Colombians have conceded 101 points in two games, without scoring a single point of their own.

Should be some good matches once we move beyond the group stage, but it would be nice if there were a larger number of competitive teams. It doesn’t help that sevens is a game where a disparity in quality can be disproportionately reflected in the scoreline, in a way that is less likely in full 15-a-side rugby, and much less likely in a low-scoring sport like soccer.

This tennis match with Venus is kind of amazing.

How so?

Just a good match, with the Belgian being super persistent and Venus trying not to wear down in a long match.

What is with the points scoring for the pools? Not the game scores, but what you get to figure out how you advance out of the round? I saw after the US game where we lost 12-5 or something like that, Fiji got 3 points and the US got one. Then Australia ran over Columbia 54-0 and Columbia still got a point? I can understand getting a point for a regulation tie or something like that, but I don’t really understand the reason to get a point for a complete loss.

In other news, cycling road racing over cobblestone is certainly interesting…

West Virginia girl. Her home state is proud…

I don’t really get it either, but that’s how they do it in sevens rugby.

Win = 3 points
Draw = 2 points
Loss = 1 point

It really doesn’t change anything, in terms of relative places on the table, and in terms of who advances to the next round. It does seem rather pointless (heh!) to give a point for a loss, though. Especially when it’s not just a loss, but a 53-0 thumping.

Note that this is different from some 15-a-side rugby tournaments, where it is also possible to get a point (called a bonus point) for a loss, but this requires meeting certain conditions.

In the Rugby World Cup:

Win = 4 points
Draw = 2 points
Loss = 0 points

Score four or more tries (touchdowns) = 1 bonus point
Lose by 7 or fewer points = 1 bonus point

Gymnast invents a truly Dick move.

You can see the Dick move in the video in the article.

GAAAHH!! Poor guy. That was tough to watch. I can’t imagine looking at a part of my body and seeing it that messed up. Ugh.

She’s a Virginia girl who is attending WVU.

That race was brutal and scary. Just watching them go downhill and negotiate the turns, whew! The women’s race is starting now. Here’s hoping for no broken bones.

Men’s soccer. Fiji 1 Mexico 0, 15 minutes into the game. Yes, the same Fiji team that lost 0-8 to South Korea and wasn’t expected to score a goal during the entire Olympics

Does NBC stream old stuff(yesterday?) with commercials without requiring cable? I don’t have cable and my HD antenna receiver keeps crackling the image during live TV. I want to hook up my computer and watch yesterday’s coverage of stuff, ads or not. Is anyone doing this?
