Woohoo! Massialas (for Team USA) beats Italy’s Avola in an amazing comeback in men’s foil. Poor Avola was losing it during the comeback.
Need a better slo-mo replay of some of these to be able to watch it.

I use the app on my iPhone and Apple TV. I might have found a cable login lying on the ground that I use to authenticate to watch.
Idiots at NBC - I don’t want to pay for Cable. I will HAPPILY pay you directly - but you don’t want my money.
Uggg nasty crash by van vlueten in the womens road race. In the lead on the lst downhill and skidded out on a corner.
.
That was savage - really hope she’s OK but that landing looked awful. Course is a disgrace really, we’ve seen the best bike handlers in the world strewn over the road and pitched into concrete drainage ditches.
Massive ride from Mara Abbott, thought she’d done enough but it was a long drag to the finish.
Yeah no free streaming unless you have a cable tv account (doesn’t work if you just have cable internet from an Internet &tv provider). You probably have a friend or relative with cable who isn’t using their login today and would be happy to let you use theirs, tho (if you have cable you really don’t need to be streaming NBC). (I am not that friend, tho. Antenna for me as well.)
Yeah I thought she had it, but overtaken in the last 500m.
On the crash it looked like she landed with her back across the edge if the concrete kerb.
Not much news other than she is conscious.
.
It’s BS. I want to pay a $15-20 fee to get olympics over internet, even if it isn’t live.
Depending on what you were watching I saw a lot of the same type of images during the coverage. Most of it has been from the cycling.
I must say, I don’t like the way they are listing the events. I really only want to record the swimming so I don’t miss it, but they don’t always say when it’s on. There have been a couple of events that I missed. Plus my DVR wants to record everything since it’s just listed as “Olympics”.
Here in Finland we have everything categorized by sports or by time/day available at a streaming service provided by the state for free, 3250 hours total over the course of the games. A lot of this stuff isn’t broadcast over TV at all (we don’t have that many TV channels), it’s only available there. I could complain about is that they are running out of A-list commentators for the less popular sports but that’s not that big a deal.
Do the other state-funded broadcasting companies do something like this as well?
Yes, the BBC provide both a schedule and full coverage of every event.
Absolutely possession is key to winning at Sevens (you can sometimes break out and run the length of the field to score), but the scoring team kicking off is intended to balance the game.
The top teams constantly practice trying to regain the ball from their own kickoff. It’s not that easy to do - you need a good hanging kick, plus a decent chase. Even then, the receiving team are facing the ball, whereas your chasers aren’t.
The top two teams in each group, plus the best two (out of three) third-placed teams qualify for the knockout stages.
That covers 8 of the 12 teams. The other 4 play a couple more KO matches to settle positions 9-12.
Mhendo is right that the scoring could be 2-1-0, but I think they do that so the result looks better for the less experienced countries. (That’s also why they play for 9-12 position - to give the newbies more experience and publicity.)
Watching Argentina v Algeria in men’s soccer. Olympic soccer suffers from the same problem WC/UEFA soccer does, the player’s are little sissy-asses who play the refs like chumps with the blatant diving.
Soccer (in general) REALLY needs to fix this.
I can deal with the low scores and all of that. I don’t need 9-8 shootouts. But when the players fake injury or contact to draw the foul, fuck 'em and their sport. Play the damn game. Video review should be used to award yellows/reds for diving.
FYI, NBA Basketball is starting to suffer from the same problem, but appears to be more active about addressing it.
I was just wondering about when Katie Ledecky would be swimming, so I typed her name into google and hit enter. Google’s first hit is an interactive info link where you can click “Schedule” and see exactly when she’ll be competing. Then I tried US diver Kassidy Cook, same deal. So it appears to work for many/most athletes.
I’m quite impressed and very pleased with this google feature.
Why doesn’t women’s soccer follow the same U23 rule as the men’s teams do?
The top level men are already a bit over-burdened with competitive tournaments, particularly European players who have the Uefa Championships in Olympics years. The women don’t have the same schedule, and probably more importantly don’t have the pro clubs in the background, lobbying against the Olympic tournament.
Yeah they should hand out Oscars for best supporting roll in a penalty shot. When I played soccer you could put someone in the hospital as long as you touched the ball first. What a bunch of wusses.
I just tried it. Cool feature, thanks for letting us know.
Congratulations to Vietnam for winning their first gold medal ever. I watched that, and it was a dramatic, come-from-behind win.
I was watching the 56 kg men’s weightlifting live through the BBC. (Screw NBC). How does someone that small manage to lift that much weight? Completely nuts.
The bar has less distance to travel and shorter limbs have better leverage.
